A man has been charged with murder after an Australian father was killed in fight at a cafe in Bali.

An Australian man has died after he was hit over the head with a chair in an alleged drunken brawl in Bali.

Troy Scott Johnston was found unresponsive in a pool of blood by his wife after the alleged fight that occurred at Uncle Benz Cafe in South Kuta in the early hours of Thursday morning.

He was taken to hospital but was unable to be saved.

The owner of the cafe, Gede Wijaya, has been charged with murder by Indonesia National Police.

The pair is believed to have been drinking together at the cafe before allegedly getting into a fight.

Mr Wijaya told police he had no intention to kill Mr Johnston, saying the 40-year-old Australian was “drunk and lost control”, local media reported.

Police alleged Mr Johnston grabbed a chair and intended to throw it at the cafe owner, before Mr Wijaya took it from him and hit him over the head.

Mr Wijaya faces 15 years in jail in Indonesia if found guilty of murder.
