Australian dad Raj Jayarajah dies after medical evacuation from Bali
The Aussie dad was medically evacuated back to Melbourne after he collapsed in front of his son while holidaying in Bali.
An Australian man who was medically evacuated out of Bali after a brain haemorrhage has died in hospital.
Raj Jayarajah, 43, was inside a Nusa Dua villa with his eight-year-old son, Ari, when he suffered a seizure and collapsed to the floor on June 30.
He underwent emergency brain surgery before he was place in an induced coma until his family could secure a Life Flight to Australia to receive life saving treatment for his injuries.
He was flown back to Australia on July 6 along with his son and wife Emma.
However, family friend Andrew MacQueen, who was holidaying with the family in Bali, shared the heartbreaking news of his death on Sunday.
“We are so sad to let you know that Raj passed away today,” he said in an update to the GoFundMe page.
Mr Jayarajah touched down in Melbourne on July 6 and was taken directly to the Alfred Intensive Care Unit where doctors ran a series of tests on him that confirmed his condition.
“[They] informed us that there was nothing that could be done to save him,” Mr MacQueen said.
“Since then, Raj has been surrounded by his family and close friends in Melbourne who have gathered by his bedside to say goodbye.”
“We are shattered to lose Raj so young – it’s a huge loss for so many people who loved him, most of all his loving family.
“It is hard to imagine life without him, and we will now begin the mourning process.”
The family has endured a nightmare series of events over the past nine days.
Mr Jayarajah’s mum, sister, brother-in-law and nieces were all holidaying in Bali when he suffered the unexpected medical episode.
After the insurance company delayed releasing funds for the medical evacuation flight, the family was forced to front up hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover the cost.
A GoFundMe started by Mr MacQueen raised almost $204,000 before the insurance company agreed to reimburse them for the cost.
“We thank everyone for their interest and the donations have been outstanding and unbelievable, we are so thankful,” he said.
In an update shared a few days ago, Mr MacQueen confirmed that the family’s travel insurer had agreed to reimburse them for the cost of the repatriation, all of the Bali medical expenses and other travel related costs.
