Aussie man ‘bashed’ after stripping naked in historic Italian town
An Australian man who was on his bucks party was reportedly bashed by a group of locals after he stripped naked in a historic town.
An Australian man celebrating at his bucks party in a historic Italian town was caught on film walking the streets naked before allegedly being bashed by a group of local men.
The unidentified groom-to-be was with friends in the ancient town of Nardò in the southern region of Puglia, known for its centuries-old farmland and Mediterranean coastline.
He was reportedly drunk when he decided to strip naked and wander the streets through the rain last Friday night.
Local Italian media reported the man, who was a few steps from a police station, was then jumped by a group of 20 men who reacted to his brazen act with violence.
The men allegedly stopped the Aussie in the Piazza della Repubblica, kicking and hitting him with bars before walking off.
The man was taken to a nearby hospital where he was treated and later released with non-serious injuries.
According to Giornale di Puglia, attackers fled before the police arrived.
Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
It’s understood the man was celebrating his bucks party with friends before he stripped naked for reasons unknown.
As residents filmed, the man was confronted by a “large group” of around 20 men, who “punched, kicked and hit the Aussie with poles” before walking away, according to local publication, Corriere della Sera.
Shocked bystanders filmed the incident with the clip showing a group of men surrounding the Aussie.
Locals have condemned the Aussie’s naked act but have also demanded the need for greater security in the sleepy town with the attack sparking outcry and safety concerns.
Local councillor Alberto Gatto lay into authorities over security concerns.
“Twenty days ago in the City Council I spoke of a city totally out of control,” he told La Repubblica.
“The mayor evidently likes these skits more, while the Police Station is no longer able to guarantee security and urban decorum in this city.”
It comes as a female tourist was caught swimming topless in a Florence fountain, reigniting the debate about appropriate behaviour when visiting another country.
The video was shared on social media in August with the caption: “Last night in Piazza Santo Spirito a girl bathes in the fountain in ‘mother nature’ style”.
The act spark massive criticism from locals, with one complaining the city has become “out of control”.
