American travel blogger Dorit Liss reveals why she wants to leave New Zealand

An American travel blogger says she is desperate to leave New Zealand after falling victim to a tirade of attacks from unfriendly locals and vandals throughout her travels.
27-year-old Dorit Liss and her 29-year-old boyfriend Andre have spent the past several months travelling around New Zealand in their 40-year-old van, but plan to cut their year-long trip short.
Taking to her YouTube channel, Ms Liss says the pair were excited to explore New Zealand after arriving in Auckland in late October.
However, the blogger from Colorado says the couple have instead encountered “rude and angry” Kiwis throughout the journey, as well as having their van windows smashed in during a terrifying attack earlier this month.
“My partner and I were sleeping in our 40-year-old RV,” Ms Liss reads from a notebook in a video which has since received 3.6k views.
“We picked a quiet and abandoned part of Christchurch to stay while we waited for the holidays to end and mechanics to open.
“I was only vaguely aware of the car pulling up outside and only barely awake enough to register someone opening a car door.”
Ms Liss said moments later, she heard a “shattering noise” that “suddenly filled” their home.
“I bolted upright … I was made incredibly aware of what had happened,” she said of the early morning attack on her van on January 8.
“The car sped away … they left Andre and I standing in the middle of our shattered home absolutely naked and still bleary from sleep. I sobbed and shook … picking up the pieces and trying to find help.”
In total, the vandals smashed seven windows of the tourists’ van, which the pair struggled to get fixed given the age of the vehicle.
Ms Liss said the attack on her home triggered a realisation that being in New Zealand “felt wrong” and that staying was “destroying” her.
In an interview with NewsHub, the blogger said the attack wasn’t an isolated incident and that altercations and abuse started as soon as the pair touched down in Auckland.
“Almost straight away we had people honking at us and yelling at us all the time,” Ms Liss told the outlet.
“The further south we went, the worse things started getting for us.
“We got to the point where we were like, ‘Okay, they must just not like travellers’. Maybe there’s this universal vendetta against people in vans now.”
Ms Liss said that while she isn’t saying people shouldn’t visit New Zealand, continuing with her trip is simply “not worth it”
“We both have each other but that feels like a lame excuse to keep trudging uphill in a place where neither of us are happy.
“It’s destroying me to continue to push through each day. It’s destroying Andre too.
“We’re going to be leaving as soon as we can.”
