Queensland border to remain closed during September

Anyone hoping to catch some Queensland sun in September will have to wait, with Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announcing the borders will stay shut.

Forget those holiday plans to the Sunshine State anytime soon, because Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says the border will stay closed to NSW until at least October.

Speaking to media from Cairns on Tuesday, Ms Palaszczuk announced the state had recorded two more coronavirus cases overnight.

The first is a 37-year-old male nurse from the Ipswich Hospital. He works in the COVID-19 ward in the hospital and there have been COVID-positive patients in that ward.

Another is an 18-year-old student at Staines Memorial College at Redbank Plains – a close contact of a student who had tested positive. The school is closed for two weeks, for deep cleaning.

Ms Palaszczuk’s announcement comes as NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian plans to announce changes to the Victoria/NSW permits for border town residents.

The most significant restriction Ms Berejiklian will announce is the expansion of the Albury-Wodonga border zone bubble, which is currently at a 2.5km radius. The new rule is expected to be increased to 50km as of midnight on Friday. This will mean that any resident living within the 50km radius will be able to obtain a border resident permit, which will allow them to travel into NSW from Victoria.
