Etiquette expert reveals surprising item you can take from a hotel

A famous British etiquette coach explains what is and isn’t acceptable to take home from a hotel room.

Surprising item you can take from a hotel

If you’re in the habit of filling your suitcase with miniature personal products when you leave a hotel, go ahead and keep doing it.

But if you’ve got your eye on the hotel robe or dishware, think again.

That’s according to advice from British etiquette coach William Hanson.

In a TikTok viewed more than 2.7 million times, Mr Hanson explains what is and isn’t acceptable to take home after a hotel stay.

One that may surprise those who are reluctant to go home with more than they came with is the hotel slippers.

“Fine to take home,” Mr Hanson confirmed while sitting in a hotel room in Dubai.

Holding up a pair of slippers, he added: “Indeed, these say ‘love me, use me, take me home.’ Words to live by.”

What else is safe to take home?

“Basically anything small like the dental kit, the shaving kit, any miniatures of shampoo or body wash, that’s absolutely fine,” he said.

Items off the take home list are: mugs, cups and saucers, glasses, pillows, and robes.

“Please leave it in the room because stealing is not good etiquette,” Mr Hanson said.

Other TikTok users had different rules when it came to what you can and can’t take home.

“Anything that they would have to replace for the next guest anyway, that’s my rule. Did I drink all this tea? No, but I could have,” one reasoned.

“I take anything I can fit in the [suit]case tbh. I feel like I’ve already paid for it so,” wrote another.

“I used to work in a hotel and some people even took light bulbs,” one former hotel worker shared.

Mr Hanson is director of The English Manner, which offers etiquette training online and in-person in London.

He also co-hosts the comedy podcast Help I Sexted My Boss.

His book of the same name was published on November 9.
