![These dramatic images and videos capture the devastation caused by the Kilauea volcano, which erupted in a small community of Hawaii s Big Island. The volcano began spewing molten rock, lava and toxic gas and has so far destroyed 35 homes and buildings and forced 1,700 people to evacuate in the Leilani Estates area since it erupted on Thursday [May 3]. Some of the evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes briefly on Sunday [May 6] to attempt to rescue pets and gather necessities. Authorities have said residents will be allowed to return to their homes each day only if it is deemed safe. Many residents living in the idyllic paradise of Leilani Estates, which is in the Puna District, are not able to buy homeowners insurance on account of living on top of an active volcano. Lava flows have engulfed homes, cars, streets and trees. An alert remains on the Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency s website, warning residents: Be prepared to evacuate at a moment's notice. On Monday [May 7] residents in a another community, Lanipuna Gardens, were not allowed to return home due to deadly volcanic gasses. It came after a new fissure opened up on Sunday, spewing sulfur dioxide gas which can be deadly in high levels.
