Elon Musk sells Bel Air property of Gene Wilder to actor’s nephew as Tesla pass milestone

While many people struggle to buy even one home, billionaire Elon Musk is on a mission to get rid of his multimillion-dollar real estate holdings.

Tech baron Elon Musk is one step closer to owning no home after selling the former estate of a beloved actor to the deceased star’s nephew.

Elon Musk bought the five-bedroom Bel Air mansion that used to belong to Willy Wonka actor Gene Wilder in 2013, however it’s thought he never spent the night in the place and it was actually used as an ultra-exclusive private school for his offspring and the sprog of top level employees at Tesla and SpaceX.

According to Variety, the estate Mr Musk paid $US6.75 million ($A9.5 million) for has sold for $US7 million ($A9.84 million).

The purchaser was a limited liability company managed by screenwriter and producer Elizabeth Hunter, who’s been married to Gene Wilder’s nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman since 2015.

The family connection could have been a deciding factor for Mr Musk, who according to records seen by Variety, may have lent the couple as much as $US6.7 million ($A9.4 million), the bulk of the purchase price.

Another is a stipulation that the house is kept largely in its original condition, which could have scared off other potential purchasers looking for a development opportunity.

Back in June, The Wall Street Journal reported Mr Musk had offloaded another Bel Air property he paid $US17 million ($A23.8 million) for in 2012 to a Chinese billionaire named William Ding for $US29 million ($A40.7 million).

In May, Mr Musk tweeted that he “will own no house” as he sought to sell off many of his worldly possessions, including six pieces of Bel Air real estate.

“I’m trying to make my life as simple as possible right now, so will only keep things that have sentimental value,” Mr Musk told The Wall Street Journal at the time.

He now has four houses remaining in Bel Air, that are “for sale by owner” on US real estate website Zillow.

There’s a catch though: He’s selling them as one listing in the form of a $62.5 million “compound”.

Mr Musk described the compound as “a project for the big thinker, designed to showcase one of the best views in Los Angeles – from the city to the ocean and beyond”.

With two houses now offloaded, Mr Musk is closer to his goal.

While he looks to have taken a financial hit with the sale of the former Wilder estate, it’s unlikely he’ll be keeping Grimes awake tossing and turning about it.

Tesla announced on Monday that Mr Musk can now add another $US2.5 billion ($A3.5 billion) to his net worth by buying heavily discounted Tesla shares.

Mr Musk will be allowed to buy $US3 billion ($A4.20 billion) in Tesla stock for only $US500 million ($A701.4 million) after unlocking the fourth tranche of his gigantic performance-based compensation deal.

Tesla reported its fifth straight profitable quarter and had a six-month average market capitalisation of $US250 billion ($A350 billion), unlocking Mr Musk’s new stock option.
