Racy Witcher 3 mod included in upgrade
A sexually explicit modification included in the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 was reportedly added unintentionally.
The Witcher developer CD Projekt has announced that it will be removing some content from the upgraded next-generation version of The Witcher 3, after a sexually explicit modification was unintentionally included.
The Witcher 3’s updated version for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series reportedly contains detailed and realistic genitalia on some of the game’s female monsters, something that was apparently not intended by the game’s developers.
Many theories were proposed as to why the updated game launched with the explicit content, but the Polish developer confirmed one of the major theories.
The company concluded that one of the community mods included in the update contained the realistic anatomy, and pledged to remove the offending assets.
“The next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt features several community-sourced mods not created by CD PROJEKT RED, on top of numerous enhancements created and implemented by the studio internally,” the company told Kotaku in a statement, “Merging everything together was a complex process and the textures in question are an unintended result present in the release version. This is something we are working to address”.
The textures in question include visible labia and pubic hair on female creatures like crones, as well as some human characters that are otherwise not visible nude under normal conditions.
The accidentally included mod is likely a mod called “Vaginas for Everyone”, but the mod’s creator told Kotaku they were not aware of its inclusion.
CD Projekt included a number of fan-made mods in the next-gen update for the game, and said at the time of release that the creators of the mods would be featured in the credits and paid compensation for their inclusion:
“We are including several popular mods in the update,” CD Projekt said, “We obtained permissions from their creators, reimbursed them, and they’ll be featured in the credits of the updated game. The mods were reworked and assets optimised as needed, and the game adjusted to run with them”.
It’s possible that CD Projekt unknowingly included the mod by implementing a collection of mods that already included the offending mod. Such packages are usually the product of multiple modders collaborating with each other.
The next-gen Witcher update also added Henry Cavill’s dog, Kal, in a tribute to the actor, who portrays the series’ protagonist Geralt in the live-action Netflix adaptation to the Witcher. It was recently revealed that Cavill will not be reprising the role in future seasons.
The Witcher also came to Fortnite late last year, in a collaboration that saw players able to unlock Geralt as a cosmetic skin in the game.
