Sony Santa Monica, the developer behind the hit God of War series, has announced that the latest game in the series, God of War Ragnarok, has sold 11 million copies.

The milestone was announced on Twitter, and likely covers copies of the game sold on both PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, as well as copies included in hardware bundles for both consoles.

“We’re incredibly humbled that God of War Ragnarok has officially sold through 11 million copies,” the studio said on Twitter, “None of this would be possible without the support of our fans, so thank you for coming on this journey with us!”

God of War Ragnarok is a sequel to 2018’s soft reboot of the God of War series, and both games have received glowing praise from fans and critics alike. Both rebooted God of War games currently hold a 94/100 score on review score aggregator website Metacritic, with the PC version of God of War sitting very slightly lower on 93/100.

God of War Ragnarok sold about 5 million copies in its first week on sale after it was released in November 2022, quickly becoming one of the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive games of all time. It’s still got a long way to go before it catches up to its predecessor, however, which has sold a total of 23 million copies in its four years on the market.

2018’s God of War is also included in the PlayStation Plus collection, a collection of games for PS5 owners that are available at no extra cost for PS Plus subscribers. Sony announced that they would be removing the free games for PS5 owners soon, although players who have redeemed the games before the cut-off date get to keep them for as long as they’re subscribed to PS Plus.

Ragnarok’s sales numbers are impressive, but they also pale in comparison to first-party games from other companies like Nintendo. While the God of War sequel sold 11 million copies in its roughly two months on the market, the “buggy” Pokemon Scarlet and Violet sold 10 million copies in their first three days on sale.

That’s despite the fact that the Pokemon games were plagued with bugs, glitches, and performance issues at launch, which remain a problem two months later. Nintendo did promise to fix the new Pokemon games, however, and a new update for the games are expected later this month.
