PlayStation cutting free games for PS5 owners

Sony has announced that the PlayStation Plus Collection perk for PS5 owners will be ending soon, prompting players to download them now.

Sony has announced that a collection of 20 games given out to PlayStation Plus subscribers who own PS5 consoles will no longer be available later this year.

The games, collectively known as the PS Plus Collection, was made available to players who bought a PlayStation 5 console, and was available from the console’s launch in 2020. It includes multiple first-party titles, including Uncharted 4 and Infamous: Second Son, alongside high profile third-party titles.

Following the introduction of the three-tier PlayStation Plus subscription, many expected that the collection would be removed, and Sony has confirmed those fears in a footnote in its monthly PS Plus blog post.

“We also wanted to provide an update on the PlayStation Plus Collection that has been offered as a benefit to PlayStation Plus members on PS5 since 2020,” the notice reads, “On May 9 the PlayStation Plus Collection will no longer be offered. If you haven’t redeemed the titles in this collection yet, you can still do so until May 9, which will enable you to access those titles even after this date for as long as you remain a PlayStation Plus member”.

Sony says that it will continue to add to its PlayStation Plus games catalogue, which is available to subscribers of the higher two tiers of PS Plus, but not the basic tier. The PS Plus Collection was redeemable to subscribers of any tier of PS Plus.

PlayStation Plus subscribers who wish to redeem the games can do so on their PS5’s by navigating to the PlayStation Plus page on the home screen and selecting PlayStation Plus Collection. Here’s a full list of all the games included:

  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Battlefield 1
  • Bloodborne
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3
  • Crash Bandicoot: N-Sane Trilogy
  • Days Gone
  • Detroit: Become Human
  • Fallout 4

The collection was thought by many to be an incentive for players to upgrade to the PS5 early on in the console’s life cycle. Now that Sony has said that the PS5 will no longer have stock issues, becoming widely available at retailers across the world, it could be that the company no longer feels the need to incentivise purchases.

Sony even released a new PS5 bundle that makes multiplayer easier this week, by including two controllers right out of the box. While it’s not any cheaper to buy the bundle, it does make setting up couch multiplayer easier.
