Apple iPhone 12 purple review: Big reason to upgrade

The new iPhone 12 purple smartphone looks great but it’s a super handy feature that makes it enough of a reason to upgrade.

Is the new iPhone worth it? Costs, availability and reviews

Apple has just released a fresh new colour of the iPhone 12 – purple. This seems to be a colour that’s coming back into fashion and a new favourite iPhone colour of mine. In Cupertino, USA, where the iPhone was designed, this colour choice reflects the uplifting feeling that comes with the new season of Spring. Arguably, the bright cheery purple is also the perfect colour for Autumn and to take us through to winter here Australia.

Unboxing

In the box of the purple iPhone 12, you’ll find the iPhone, documentation (including an Apple sticker) and a lightning to USB-C cable. The iPhone 12 models don’t include earbuds or a charging plug.

Immediately the striking lavender or violet colour is beautiful to look at. The back of the phone has a shiny glass finish that wraps around to the flat-edges of the phone that take on a matt look.

iPhone 12 features

Although the iPhone 12 was originally released in October 2020, this is still an excellent phone with features that stand out from the previous iPhone 11.

For one, the iPhone 12 has MagSafe capabilities, which means the device is even easier to charge. Previous iPhones have wireless charging capabilities, however, it’s easy to misplace an iPhone on a wireless charging pad so that it doesn’t end up charging. The iPhone 12 on the other hand will attach to Apple’s new MagSafe chargers with a satisfying magnetic click, which makes sure I always know the device is charging successfully.

Apple also has a range of accessories such as colourful cases that work with MagSafe and third party companies such as Belkin offer convenient MagSafe car mounting accessories. It might sound silly, but to me, even this magnetic feature is enough of a reason to upgrade if you’re contemplating it. It’s just so handy.

Size and display

The iPhone 12 screen is 6.1 inches diagonally and personally I find it to be the perfect screen size for all round use. The near bezel-less display is great for watching videos or when you need to do some work such as sending emails or scanning or signing documents. Also, its OLED Super Retina XDR display looks incredible and is one of the best displays I’ve seen on a smartphone.

Cameras

There are three cameras in total. Two 12 megapixel cameras on the back – one wide and one ultra wide. The selfie camera on the front is also 12 megapixels. Video recording is also impressive with the ability to not only record in 1080p but also 4K and HDR video recording with Dolby Vision at up to 30fps. The device’s screen is extremely responsive and snappy and because of its A14 Bionic chip apps like photo and video editing software and high powered games run seamlessly.

Awesome features

Bonus features of the iPhone 12 is that it is IP68 water and dust resistant meaning it can survive submersion in up to two metres of water for up to 30 minutes. The phone also has 5G compatibility and the battery life easily lasts the day.

Price

The prices for the iPhone 12 are $1,349 for 64GB of internal storage, $1,429 for 128GB and $1,599 for 256GB. If purple is not for you the phone already comes in a multitude of colours including black, white, red, blue and green.

Though if you’re still on the fence about purple, it sure seems to be a colour that’s coming into fashion so it’s likely to draw compliments. I’d recommend grabbing a clear case for it so you can keep it nice and fresh while flaunting the hottest new device.
