Matteo Berrettini can’t handle Ajla Tomljanovic’s Wimbledon brilliance

Ajla Tomljanovic has equalled her best ever grand slam result but even a dominant display couldn’t stop her boyfriend losing his mind.

Glamorous tennis power couple is taking over Wimbledon

Ajla Tomljanovic has moved into her second ever grand slam quarterfinal but once again her relationship has won Wimbledon.

The Aussie star set up an all-Aussie quarterfinal with World No. 1 Ash Barty after claiming her place in the final eight with a 6-4 3-0 walkover against 18-year-old British wunderkind Emma Raducanu.

Raducanu retired with breathing difficulties, something tennis legend John McEnroe claimed was due to the youngster being overwhelmed by the situation.

The result handed Tomljanovic the victory but it appeared she was headed towards victory anyway.

Not that you’d know it looking at her boyfriend Italian tennis star Matteo Berrettini.

The World No. 9 played first up on court 12 and had already sealed his place in the men’s quarterfinals with a straight sets win over Ilya Ivashka.

It allowed him to be courtside for Tomljanovic’s match and it was a rollercoaster.

The cameras caught an excited Berrettini courtside trying to get his energy out when it was 3-0 in the second set, just before Raducanu pulled out with her breathing difficulties.

While the pair are both in the midst of their best ever Wimbledon campaigns, it’s their relationship that has already won Wimbledon.

Earlier in the tournament when Tomljanovic beat Jelena Ostapenko before a heated clash as the Aussie accused her of lying and cheating by faking injury, Berrettini wasn’t courtside as he usually is as he had a match at the same time.

Speaking in an interview the following day, Berrettini shared how stressed he gets when sitting in the stands.

“I feel 10 times more stressed when I’m watching her match than when I’m actually playing my match so I would rather have her playing at the same time,” Berrettini said as the pair were interviewed together after their most recent wins.

“When she’s playing and when my brother is playing, I’m the most stressed guy on the planet. I would rather play than watch her match.”

That being said, he’s still a good boyfriend, asking about Tomljanovic’s score as he left the court after his win during the Ostapenko match.

Tomljanovic also revealed she struggles to watch the 25-year-old play because nerves get the better of her, and is far happier when they’re on court at the same time.

“It takes away from the stress when you’re watching from the locker room,” she said. “When he starts, if I just finish and he’s in the third set, I won’t go there, maybe for superstition, unless he’s down to change it up.”

Interestingly, Berrettini is set to face Canadian 16th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime with the pair good friends as the Canadian dates Tomljanovic’s cousin.

“After we won, all three of us passed each other in the hallway,” Tomljanovic said of Auger-Aliassime. “I was so happy for him because how he goes about the sport is unbelievable. He wants it so much. He loves everything about it.

“To see him do well, it makes me so happy. I gave him a fist pump, like, ‘Yay, Felix.’ I think they actually also hugged. I’m happy one of them will be through on Wednesday.

“If he had lost today, that would have sucked more. Of course, I’d rather see them in the final, but I think it’s unbelievable that one of them will be in the semis.”

The pair were first linked in late 2019 when Tomljanovic was spotted in Berrettini’s box during his fourth round match at the US Open.

An Instagram post of the pair visiting an Italian restaurant in New York also sparked suggestions Tomljanovic had moved on with Berrettini after breaking up with ex-boyfriend Kyrgios.

Tomljanovic and Kyrgios started going out in 2015 but in 2017, she scrubbed all photos of the couple from her social media page after the Canberran was spotted partying with other women at Wimbledon.

Tomljanovic is loved up with Berrettini now and the couple survived quarantine together when Covid-19 hit last year.

The Croatian-born 28-year-old said being forced to spend so much time together after the WTA and ATP tours were shut down put their relationship on fast-forward, and joked she was responsible for Berrettini’s rapid rise up the rankings after meeting when he was world No. 30.
