Glamorous tennis power couple is taking over Wimbledon

After breaking up with Nick Kyrgios, Ajla Tomljanovic found love elsewhere within tennis circles and it’s paying off for the happy couple.

Glamorous tennis power couple is taking over Wimbledon

Everyone at Wimbledon was raving about Nick Kyrgios’ new partnership with Venus Williams but all the talk could soon be about tennis power couple Ajla Tomljanovic and Matteo Berrettini.

The players are happy on and off the court as they celebrate making inroads to progress to the second week at the All England Club together.

Tomljanovic is through to the quarter-finals of a grand slam for the first time after British teenager Emma Raducanu retired during the second set of their round of 16 match for medical reasons.

There was already plenty of drama in Tomljanovic’s campaign before then. The world No. 75 accused Jelena Ostapenko of lying and cheating by faking injury to score a medical time-out and disrupt her rhythm when the Aussie star was on the brink of victory in their round three clash on Sunday.

It’s a good thing Berrettini wasn’t watching from the stands like he normally does, because he was playing at the same time — busy beating Aljaz Bedene in straight sets — meaning he was distracted from stressing out about his girlfriend’s rollercoaster ride.

“I feel 10 times more stressed when I’m watching her match than when I’m actually playing my match so I would rather have her playing at the same time,” Berrettini said as the pair were interviewed together after their most recent wins.

“When she’s playing and when my brother is playing, I’m the most stressed guy on the planet. I would rather play than watch her match.”

But just because he wasn’t there to support, it doesn’t mean Berrettini wasn’t worried about his better half. The Italian admitted even during his match he was nervous because he couldn’t see her score, and was envisaging the worst case scenario.

As soon as his match finished Berrettini asked his coach how Tomljanovic was going, pumped to hear she was dominating late in the second set and on the cusp of victory.

Berrettini too hot to handle

World No. 9 Berrettini was on a hot streak entering Wimbledon after winning the lead-in tournament at Queens and has continued to shine on grass.

Incredibly, across his first three matches, opponents were unable to return 50 per cent of his serves at the All England Club. He was averaging a whopping 20 aces per match and had only been broken once.

Kyrgios was complaining last week about the slowness of the courts and how they don’t favour the big servers as much as they should, but Wimbledon’s controversial preparation of its grass this year hasn’t been a problem for Berrettini or his bombs.

Tomljanovic also revealed she struggles to watch the 25-year-old play because nerves get the better of her, and is far happier when they’re on court at the same time.

“It takes away from the stress when you’re watching from the locker room,” she said. “When he starts, if I just finish and he’s in the third set, I won’t go there, maybe for superstition, unless he’s down to change it up.”

Berrettini beat Belarusian Ilya Ivashka to join Tomljanovic in the quarters, and will play Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime for a spot in the final four.

Love is in the air for tennis power couple

Tomljanovic and Berrettini are like any other couple, as one quip from the Italian proved when standing alongside his partner for a TV interview after their latest wins.

“So far it was a great day. Maybe we’re going to fight in the afternoon for no reason but so far it’s a great day,” he said.

We’re sure plenty of couples can relate to that.

The pair were first linked in late 2019 when Tomljanovic was spotted in Berrettini’s box during his fourth round match at the US Open. An Instagram post of the pair visiting an Italian restaurant in New York also sparked suggestions Tomljanovic had moved on with Berrettini after breaking up with ex-boyfriend Kyrgios.

Tomljanovic and Kyrgios started going out in 2015 but in 2017, she scrubbed all photos of the couple from her social media page after the Canberran was spotted partying with other women at Wimbledon.

Tomljanovic is loved up with Berrettini now and the couple survived quarantine together when Covid-19 hit last year. The Croatian-born 28-year-old said being forced to spend so much time together after the WTA and ATP tours were shut down put their relationship on fast-forward, and joked she was responsible for Berrettini’s rapid rise up the rankings after meeting when he was world No. 30.

“I think that if you’re happy off the court it’s definitely going to help your career but at the same time you’ve got to be smart about how you’re going to balance it,” Tomljanovic said in a Q&A with tennis legend Chrissie Evert last year.

“I really believe that the happiness in general and in life can really help your career. I don’t know if that was the secret but there are some examples where that really works.”

Berrettini agreed, adding: “It’s important to find someone who understands what you’re doing. It’s not easy being on tour for nine, 10 months a year and if you can be with someone who understands that, I think it’s a plus.

“Being able to feel free about this … is really important for both of us, for our career and our happiness in general.”

Berrettini’s love for Tomljanovic was evident in the chat with Evert as he expressed his gratitude for her efforts to connect with his nearest and dearest.

“I really like how she’s really close to her family and I told her a couple of days ago how I really appreciate the relationship she’s built with my family and my friends,” he said.

“It’s not easy, especially because they’re Italian. My dad doesn’t speak really good English so it’s tough so it’s really nice and my family loves her.”
