The NRL's night of nights has come and gone with the Sydney Roosters superstar fullback James Tedesco claiming the top honour.

Tedesco entered the night as the short-priced favourite and despite a tight race, he edged out Melbourne Storm star Cameron Smith by three votes. Tedesco flew home in the second half of the season and held a three vote lead entering the final round.

But as the final votes were read out Smith only received the single vote to hand the award to Tedesco with 34 votes to his name. The top five on the NRL's night of nights was James Tedesco (34), Cameron Smith (31), Mitchell Moses (29), Payne Haas (27) and Cameron Munster (22).

The win for Tedesco avoided a big time disaster for the NRL with Smith not in attendance after falling sick and remaining in Melbourne for the night. Brisbane Broncos rookie Payne Haas finished off a stellar night with a fourth placed finish to go along with claiming the Rookie of the Year and Prop of the Year honours.

The top five finishers all claimed the individual awards for their respective positions in earning a spot in the 2019 NRL Team of the Year. See below for the full list of award winners from the night.

Coach and Captain of the Year

The Melbourne Storm may not be competing in the NRL Grand Final, but they're cleaning up at the Dally M awards with Cameron Smith claiming Captain of the Year honours with Craig Bellamy collecting the Coach of the Year award.

Rookie of the Year winner

The first award of the night has been named with Brisbane Broncos star first year player Payne Haas taking out the 2019 Rookie of the Year.

Haas beat out Bronson Xerri (Sharks), Maika Sivo (Eels), Ryan Papenhuyzen (Storm) and Briton Nikora (Sharks) in what many have labelled the "best rookie class ever seen".

Fans on social media were split on Haas being named the winner, but the biggest grievance was the award was named before the live coverage of the night had even kicked off. But the league clarified there were "a few off-broadcast awards" for the night.

NRL rookie's brutal Dally M snub

Leading try scorer Maika Sivo is a glaring omission after the NRL unveiled the nominees for their award categories ahead of Wednesday night’s Dally M Medal ceremony in Sydney.

Parramatta powerhouse Sivo was a key factor behind the Eels’ remarkable rise from 2018 wooden spooners to 2019 semi-finalists, scoring a league leading 22 tries for the season.

Yet the Eels X-factor didn’t get a nod when the category nominees were confirmed by the NRL ahead of the Dally M Medal night, surprisingly failing to feature as a Winger of the Year finalist.

Instead his teammate Blake Ferguson made the list along with the Sydney Roosters’ Daniel Tupou, Melbourne’s Josh Addo-Carr, the Warriors’ Ken Maumalo and surprise candidate Edrick Lee of Newcastle.

The bookies’ favourite for the Dally M Medal, Roosters No.1 James Tedesco, heads the nominees for Fullback of the Year along with reigning champion Roger Tuivasa-Sheck of the Warriors, Canberra surprise packet Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, Parramatta’s Clint Gutherson and Melbourne’s Jahrome Hughes, who finished the season as Storm halfback.

Tedesco is tipped to claim his maiden Dally M Medal before the Roosters aim to become the first team to win back-to-back titles since Brisbane in 1992-93 when they line up against the Raiders in Sunday’s decider.
