Sam Kerr has shared intimate photos from her private 30th birthday celebrations with her girlfriend Kristie Mewis in the US.
The Matildas star shared a gallery of happy snaps to Instagram on Sunday showing the couple enjoying the sunshine for the “pre birthday cele”, as Kerr captioned it.
The gallery started with a very sweet selfie of Team USA player Mewis, 32, cuddling Kerr while holding a bottle of beer.
It seemed to be a very low-key weekend of celebrations for the two international soccer stars, who went public with their relationship in 2021, capped off with a daytime stroll, a few drinks on a jetty, a boat ride and a box of cupcakes.
Mewis commented under the post “Ugh the besttttt” with three red heart emojis, the first of many wellwishing comments.
The birthday celebrations are about a week early for the Matildas and Chelsea FC star, but come fresh off the back of a historic few weeks on and off the pitch.
Despite missing three games of the FIFA Women’s World Cup with a calf strain, Kerr was a key player in the team that set the nation alight and shattered all kinds of records throughout the tournament.
She was one of the many Tillies to find the back of the net in the longest-ever penalty shootout in World Cup history, both men’s and women’s.
And, though the night ended in tragedy for Australian fans, Kerr blasted what many say was the “goal of the tournament” in the semi-final against England.
Even after the tournament, Kerr has continued to make history by becoming the first Australian to get a podium spot in UEFA’s player of the year award.
She came second to Spain’s Aitana Bonmati at the prestigious European awards on Thursday, making history as the first Aussie to finish in the top two since the men’s award began in the 2010/2011 season, and women’s inclusion in 2013.
The achievement recognises the Chelsea forward’s extraordinary campaign with the Blues after her 29 goals across all competitions for the club this season helped the team win the women’s FA Cup and Super League “double” in England.
Organised by the Professional Footballers’ Association, the awards are voted for by fellow players and salute the best male and female players in English football in 2023.
