Tongues had been wagging since an Instagram post of Mewis wearing what looked very much like an engagement ring emerged in mid-September.
But the pair kept it quiet, playing a game with fans as they refused to confirm the news until Mewis broke the couple’s silence on November 9 in an exclusive interview with People Magazine.
In the interview, Mewis confirmed the engagement for the first time and revealed how supporting Kerr had been after the US were knocked out in the quarterfinal stage of the Women’s World Cup.
“My biggest supporter, always listening to me nag and complain, all of my crazy antics,” Mewis said.
But the latest post on Tuesday night has also revealed just when they were engaged — September 1st, 2023.
That was just under two weeks after the Matildas’ World Cup campaign ended in the 2-0 third-place playoff loss to Sweden.
It’s impressive for Kerr, who is one of the biggest women’s footballers in the world, and her bride, a high-profile player in her own right, to be to keep everything quiet for nearly three weeks.
It was also a few days before Kerr’s 30th birthday which the couple spent together in the US.
They kept it so quiet, one fan even asked: “When is the ring coming?”
The release of the photos — and the date — sparked an outpouring of celebrations from high-profile friends and fans.
Matildas superstar goalie Mackenzie Arnold commented: “Here they are. Love you guys x”.
England stars and Kerr’s Chelsea teammates Hannah Hampton, Aggie Beever-Jones, Fran Kirby and captain Millie Bright as well as ex-Chelsea teammate Carly Telford all passed on their well wishes.
Matildas star Ellie Carpenter, Emily Gielnik and Tameka Yallop also joined in the love-in.
Aussie cricket star David Warner wrote simply: “Congratulations.”
Ex-Seven weatherman Sam Mac added: “Back of the net!”
The post quickly went viral with more than 150,000 likes on Instagram and as well as over 12,000 on Facebook within two hours of posting.
It's also been quite the few months for Mewis, who’s Gotham FC won the NWSL with a 2-1 win over OL Reign last week.
Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics and since then the power couple have regularly shared snaps together.
“We’re not private people,” Kerr told Gaffer.
“I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”
Kerr added that it was important to her to be with someone who understood the demands of football, particularly when they play on the opposite sides of the world.
Mewis added: “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives, and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me.
“I love to share my relationship on social media.”
The pair won over fans at the World Cup, sharing a photo dump of their time together, as well as being snapped celebrating with a kiss.
