Sam Kerr’s big baby announcement has been ruined by a barrage of ugly comments that have sparked ugly scenes.

The Matildas captain on Monday night announced she is set to become a mum, confirming news her partner Kristie Mewis is pregnant.

The couple first shared the news on their social media platforms with the 31-year-old Chelsea striker posting a series of black and white snaps that showed the engaged couple kissing and holding ultrasound photos.

“Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” the post read.

The pair live together in southwest London, but the Matildas golden girl is originally from Western Australia.

The couple shared their joy when responding to a post from Mewis’ West Ham United team on Instagram with a clever photo celebrating the expected birth of their child in 2025.

“This is so sweet thank you guys,” Mewis wrote.

Kerr also commented: “Aw too cute”.

The special day has since been tainted by an ugly social media backlash with Twitter users making “disgusting” homophobic comments across social media accounts.

The pair reportedly turned comments off on their photo post because of trolls, but they have since been switched back on.

The official Chelsea women’s football team also turned comments off when it shared the news with four million followers.

The Sky Sports Women’s Super League account also tuned off comments to a post viewed five million times.

Football commentators were shocked to read some of the comments that had been posted.

The announcement also came on the same weekend where the Women’s Super League launched a “Rainbow Laces” campaign, promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives.

BBC sport commentator Tom Overend posted: “Extremely disappointing to see even the slightest negative reaction to Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis’s fantastic news.

“Couple are free to do what they choose, and you can be a good parent whatever your gender, creed, colour or anything.

“We are in 2024 folks.”

David Shaw, a Manchester United fan, posted: “I can’t believe some of the comments I’ve seen about Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis news.

“Seen one saying how’s that legal and called it bulls***. Seen others say Sam’s not the parent others more interested in who the father is and how much they paid him. Quite frankly it’s disgusting”.

One Twitter user wrote: “Honestly, they [trolls] can just ignore the post and move on like normal people. It’s 2024 and they’re still doing it”.

Women’s football commentator Paul Wheeler wrote: “Homophobia isn’t a thing in women’s football” - Also women’s football, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis announce they’re having a baby and comments are full of “fans” spouting the worst kind of homophobic crap on Rainbow Laces weekend”.

A post from the DAZN Women’s Football account was also filled with ugly comments.

“I saw a lot of childish comments here,” one Chelsea supporter wrote.

“Like you don’t know how they go about it now in the hospitals? Some of you need to learn more about IVF and other stuffs.”

Chelsea Pride, a LGBTQ+ community support group for Chelsea fans, posted a lengthy statement on social media, condemning the reaction.

“Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or in our society,” the organisation said.

“It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to see social media flooded with hateful comments when we should be celebrating love, pride, and unity.

“Over the weekend and today, our club was forced to shut down comments and even delete posts, posts that should have been shining moments of joy, from the powerful symbolism of Rainbow Laces to the incredible news that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis will welcome a child in 2025.

“No to Hate isn’t just a slogan; it’s a battle cry. It’s a reminder that we must keep fighting for what is right, for true acceptance, and for a game that embraces everyone without exception. We refuse to stand by in silence.

“At Chelsea Pride, we stand against every act of homophobia with unwavering strength and passion. We fight for a football world where every player, fan and family can live openly and be celebrated, without fear or prejudice.

“This is our game, our club and our unwavering commitment: Hate will never win here. We will always stand for love, unity and an inclusive future for football.”

Kerr has played her entire career facing similar comments.

She had a miserable start to her 2024 with a serious knee injury forcing her to withdraw from the Matilda’s disastrous Olympics campaign.

Her adorable post had more than 70,000 likes within half an hour of the post going live on Monday evening.

The Matildas’ official Instagram page posted: “Congrats!”

Aussie superstar Mary Fowler also added: “Congrats!”

English football star and Kerr’s Chelsea teammate Aggie Beever-Jones commented: “I’m so happy for you guys, congratulations.”

Man City’s Chloe Kelley added: “Congratulations to you both.”

“Let me be the first to say the baby will represent Australia in football,” one fan wrote.

There were countless other comments congratulating the pair.

Mewis, who herself is a former US national team player, moved to the UK from her former club Gotham FC last December.

While it would have pitted the couple against each other, Kerr’s injury meant they have not been opponents since the move, while Mewis has only tallied one game in the WSL.

Kerr and Mewis announced their engagement last November, two months after rumours initially swirled about the move.

The pair kept it quiet, playing a game with fans as they refused to confirm the news until Mewis broke the couple’s silence on November 9 in an exclusive interview with People Magazine.

And a post confirmed the couple were engaged on September 1, 2023.

That was just under two weeks after the Matildas’ World Cup campaign ended in the 2-0 third-place playoff loss to Sweden.

Kerr and Mewis went public with their relationship in 2021 after the Tokyo Olympics and since then the power couple have regularly shared snaps together.

“We’re not private people,” Kerr told Gaffer.

“I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football.”

Kerr added that it was important to her to be with someone who understood the demands of football, particularly when they play on the opposite sides of the world.

Mewis added: “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives, and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me.

“I love to share my relationship on social media.”

The pair won over fans at the World Cup, sharing a photo dump of their time together, as well as being snapped celebrating with a kiss.

But while off the field life appears to be going great for Kerr, her football return is still seemingly some time away after an extended Matildas squad for four home friendly matches starting later this month was announced without Kerr’s name on the list.
