Steve Smith storms off angrily after costly DRS call robs him of another century

Steve Smith couldn’t stop shaking his head as he walked off the SCG, absolutely fuming after DRS robbed him of a second century.

Steve Smith has achieved plenty in his Test career, but the batting maestro fell short of an elusive career first on Sunday.

The 31-year-old is yet to score a century in both innings of a Test match on Australian soil. Teammate David Warner has completed the rare feat twice, while former Test captain Ricky Ponting incredibly managed it during his 100th Test match.

Smith looked on track to salute for a second time on day four of the third Test against India in Sydney but unfortunately, the right-hander fell 19 runs short of joining the elite club.

Smith came out all guns blazing after lunch as the hosts looked to score quick runs and set up a declaration — but he fell victim to an excellent review from the Indians.

Smith hooked his first ball after the break for six, then flicked his second ball to the rope on the leg side. Two more boundaries saw him race from 58 to 81 in no time before a Ravi Ashwin delivery spun back sharply and hit the Aussie superstar on the front pad.

Indian skipper Ajinkya Rahane challenged the call after on-field umpire Paul Wilson kept his finger down.

Hawkeye showed the ball was in fact hitting the stumps and Smith was on his way, robbed of the chance of making twin tons in the Test.

Smith shook his head when the decision came down and continued to shake it as he walked off the ground. Whether he was filthy with the technology, or just angry at falling short of his century, was unclear.

“Steve Smith, just when he was eyeing back-to-back hundreds, he’s gone,” former Australian batsman Mark Waugh said in commentary for Fox Cricket. “Brilliant innings though.”

During his second-innings knock, Smith surpassed the legendary David Boon to become Australia’s ninth-highest run scorer in the Test arena.

His batting average stands at 74.81 at the SCG in Test cricket, having smacked three centuries and six fifties in eight matches.

After Smith’s dismissal, Australian captain Tim Paine and rising star Cameron Green compiled a 104-run partnership to push the lead beyond 400, Green registering his maiden Test half century before being caught behind for 84 trying to up the ante.
