Umpire Paul Reiffel death stares Indian star Jasprit Bumrah after childish act

Umpire Paul Reiffel looked like an angry schoolteacher when Jasprit Bumrah lost his cool and lashed out in the most petulant way.

Umpire Paul Reiffel was not impressed.

Tim Paine faces a fine and possible suspension for swearing when addressing umpire Paul “Blocker” Wilson earlier in the Test and Jasprit Bumrah has also worked his way into the officials’ bad books for his petty reaction when things weren’t going his way.

His penalty won’t be anywhere near as harsh — but it might result in being crossed off Paul Reiffel’s Christmas card list.

The Indian fast bowler often has a smile on his face but the frustration was getting to him as Australia — by way of Steve Smith and Cameron Green — built a healthy lead and batted the tourists out of the Test match.

When the Aussies were 4/165 — a lead of 259 — Bumrah’s patience was wearing thin and he knocked the bails off at the non-striker’s end for no reason when walking back to his mark.

It’s become a trait of Bumrah’s of late, as cricket journalist Bharat Sundaresan pointed out earlier in the Test.

“You know Jasprit Bumrah is not happy when he starts knocking the bails off with his hand at the bowler’s end. Becoming his trademark now,” Sundaresan tweeted.

Former Australian quick turned umpire Reiffel wasn’t impressed with Bumrah’s childish behaviour, giving the paceman a death stare and the double teapot after his unnecessary act of violence towards the woodwork.

To be fair to Bumrah, he had every reason to be upset. He’s been forced to bowl every day this Test after his batsmen capitulated on day three, and his teammates haven’t exactly helped him in the field.

He should have dismissed Marnus Labuschagne with the second ball of day four after the Aussie No. 3 clipped a ball off his pads to Hanuma Vihari at square leg. It was a nice height and travelling at an easy pace, but Vihari somehow botched the chance and dropped the ball, allowing Labuschagne to score his second half century of the match.

The right-hander was finally dislodged when he gloved Navdeep Saini down the leg side to substitute wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha.
