Western Bulldogs respond to dirty detail of Adam Treloar’s ugly split with Collingwood

The Western Bulldogs have responded to another controversial aspect of Adam Treloar’s split from Collingwood as the ugly saga rolls on.

Outgoing Western Bulldogs president Peter Gordon has weighed in on the conflict that continues to surround Adam Treloar’s exit from Collingwood, saying he’s confident the two clubs will work out the finer points of their deal.

Treloar’s departure from the Pies in the recent AFL Trade Period was one of the ugliest break-ups in recent memory and the dust is still yet to settle completely.

Despite being contracted to Collingwood until the end of 2025, Treloar was offloaded to make room in the salary cap. During the saga reports emerged the club didn’t think the midfielder would be able to handle living away from his young daughter and partner Kim Ravaillion, who is moving to Queensland in 2021 to continue her professional netball career.

Treloar also confirmed Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley told him senior players at the club didn’t want him around anymore — a claim he does not believe.

Even after a move to the Dogs was announced at the last minute of the Trade Period, the finer details haven’t been sorted. AFL.com.au first reported last month the Bulldogs and Magpies were in a standoff about how much each club would pay of Treloar’s salary.

The 27-year-old stood to earn approximately $900,000 a year by seeing out his contract with Collingwood. The Bulldogs reportedly believed the Pies would contribute $300,000 a year of that payment for taking him off their hands, but Collingwood is determined to pay less than that.

Gordon, who announced on Thursday he will be stepping down as Bulldogs president in a couple of weeks, believes both clubs will eventually reach a compromise.

“When you have got clubs like Collingwood and the Bulldogs, we’ve got a very good relationship from the president down in each club, we understand each other’s problems … we will sort out the details with Collingwood in relation to that and we will all get on with our lives,” Gordon told SEN Breakfast.

“It’s not (resolved), but it will be because you have got two clubs that respect each other and a player that both clubs respect.

“He’s obviously already made a terrific contribution to Collingwood and we’ve got high expectations as well and a deal got done in extraordinary circumstances and sensible heads will prevail and we will do a deal … I’m sure it will be fine.”

Gordon indicated there was “not a deadline” to resolve the pay dispute.

“I’m sure the AFL would understand in circumstances where it itself has struggled to get details out of TPPs (Total Player Payments) and what the shift in player contracts and arrangements, including with the AFLPA and what the variable club funding model is going to be in a year when we’ve seen more tumultuous change than ever before,” Gordon said.

“I’m sure that they appreciate the position that we’re in …. it will get sorted out.”
