Collingwood slammed for Adam Treloar treatment as trade rumours swirl

Collingwood has been blasted for their “disgraceful” treatment of Adam Treloar as a rival club defiantly shut down a rumour once and for all.

Collingwood have come under fire for the way they’ve handled the fallout to Adam Treloar’s ongoing trade saga.

The midfield star was thrown into the trade rumour mill two weeks ago when it was revealed his wife and netball star Kim Ravaillion will resume her career with the Queensland Firebirds in the Super Netball competition.

With his wife and daughter set to relocate to Queensland, AFL 360 hosts Mark Robinson and Gerard Whateley believed there was little to no chance of him staying with the Magpies, suggesting he was a strong chance of moving to one of the Queensland teams — the Lions or Suns.

Treloar emphatically shut down the rumours, saying he wanted nothing more than to remain in the black and white jumper.

Brisbane General Manager of Football David Noble is adamant Treloar won’t be joining the Lions, telling AFL Trade Radio: “No (we’re not interested) on the basis that … there’s three things: One, strategy overall, you’ve got to be clear that if it fits into your strategy overall that’s your first tick.

“The second tick is you’ve got to have a spot on the list and the third is you’ve got to have some capacity in your total player payments (TPP).

“If I go back to the first one, it’s probably not in our strategy at this point in time. We’ve gone for the tall (Essendon wantaway Joe Daniher).

“List spots, we’re struggling to understand what that looks like and TPP, we’ve been pretty proactive in re-contracting a lot of our players already and so our cap is probably positioned around a few other areas at the moment that wouldn’t allow us to do that.

“For us, Adam wouldn’t be an option.”

Treloar was reportedly left “incredibly frustrated” after approaching Collingwood only to learn they didn’t want him there next season.

Treloar is contracted until the end of the 2025 season and has been linked to the Gold Coast Suns but the Herald Sun reported the Magpies would need to pay some of the star’s $800,000 contract in 2021 if he left.

The Suns are reportedly open to trading the No. 5 pick for him but only if the Magpies pay part of his contract.

Fox Footy’s Tom Morris reported the Magpies don’t see Treloar as part of the club’s future and would “consider paying more than $200,000 of his 2021 salary even if he was at another club”.

The report also claimed the Magpies said he was “difficult to coach at times”.

Collingwood have remained quiet to the general public and their fanbase, a move that has come under fire from former Pies recruiter Matt Rendell.

“Absolutely they should be talking about it,” he said. “I don’t know why they wouldn’t be talking about it and explain what’s going on. If they don’t, it’s going to go on until the end of the trade period.

“You might come out with a statement about what’s happening and just be honest - that’s what players and supporters want.”

Rendell also highlighted his worries surrounding the culture of one of the biggest club’s in the AFL.

“That’s a worry. If you’ve signed players to backended contracts and you’re trying to trade them out, I see it as a worry for the spirit and morale of your club,” he said.

“The players would be a bit stressed about it. He’s a pretty popular player.”

The ex-Collingwood recruiter floated the possibility the club would look to send Treloar north to continue being around his family in a move that would be good for his wellbeing.

“He is an obsessive compulsive kind of bloke which makes him a great footballer but they would be worried about him fretting about not seeing his partner, or who knows what is going to happen next year with COVID-19, whether we are out of this or not,” Rendell said.

“It is so hard to predict. They would be thinking it might affect his footy being separated from his partner and his child. They probably thought it is not a bad idea to float that (trade) again. He has said ‘No, I can make it work, I want to stay in Melbourne. I like Melbourne’.”

Treloar has a big call to make.

Essendon great Matthew Lloyd slammed that suggestion.

“I don’t think there is (any coming back). It’s interesting they’re talking about Adam’s wellbeing and all those sorts of things — If a club wants you enough, they will work with you to make it work,” he told AFL Trade Radio.

“Can you imagine in theory if Dustin Martin or Marcus Bontempelli’s wife signs a contract with a netball team and he says ‘I still want to play and we can work through it’ ... they’d do everything in their power to keep him.

“They’ve got themselves in a bit of a salary cap mess here and Adam Treloar is the collateral damage.”

Former Port Adelaide premiership star Kane Cornes agreed with Lloyd and clipped the Pies for how they’ve treated Treloar.

“The treatment of the player is bordering on disgraceful when you look at the way it has been done,” Cornes told Trade Radio.

“There’s been no one from the club that has come out and spoken on this. The way that they’re treating him is really disgraceful.”
