House fire caused by electric blanket prompts safety warning

A teenage boy has died and two more are fighting for their lives after a horrifying fire tore through a rural home 420km north of Perth.

Four teenage boys aged between 12 and 14 were inside their home in Geraldton when the blaze broke out shortly after 4pm on Thursday.

Emergency services attended the home in the suburb of Mount Tarcoola and found three boys suffering burns, and a forth at a nearby house.

The three boys were rushed to Perth’s Children’s Hospital with “significant burns”, where tragically one boy aged 13 died on Monday.

A hospital spokesperson said the two of the boys aged 12 and 14 were in a critical but stable condition.

In the aftermath of the blaze, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to raise money for the family.

“The family travelled from Geraldton to Perth to be with them (the boys), while they fight for their lives,” campaign author Nadine Ryan said.

“The brothers are good boys who attend school and have a close knit of friends.

“They don’t get into trouble and they always try and do the right thing.

“This tragic incident has rocked the family and community.”

Ms Ryan said the family, who lost all their belonging in the blaze, were calling on the community to help them purchase food, fuel, clothing, and personal items while in Perth as the boys would need to remain close to the hospital for their recovery.

So far, the campaign had raised more than $1200 for the family.

WA Police meanwhile continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the blaze.

It took firefighters about an hour to bring the blaze under control on Friday.

Arson Squad detectives combed through the scene on Friday to try and find what started the inferno.
