A mum travelling with a toddler arrived in Perth to discover their high rise Airbnb apartment had a faulty window.
A mum travelling to Perth with her toddler was horrified to discover her high rise Airbnb apartment had a faulty window.
Isabel was staying at the apartment on the 16th floor with her parents and young child, when she was alerted to the danger by her mum who was the first to arrive at the accommodation.
“I don’t think you can stay here, Dad and I have tried to section this part off and we can’t section it off,” her mum said in a text.
“There’s a plastic sheet where there should be a window.”
Isabel, who does not want to use her last name, immediately contacted the host with serious safety concerns about the gaping hole in the window with plastic taped over it.
“We can’t stay here,” she told the owner.
Isabel contacted the Airbnb 24-hour support line to report the safety risk and find somewhere else to stay.
“I was shocked and pretty speechless that someone would rent it out in that condition,” she said.
“The window was about 2m by 1m in height.
“Imagine if something happened.”
Isabel did not arrive in Perth until late at night so they spent one night in the apartment and left the following morning.
Airbnb refunded the group after being approached for comment on the news story.
It is not clear how long the window had been faulty.
“When we spoke to the building concierge, they told us that they need a technician to come out from Germany to fix them,” she said.
An Airbnb Australia spokesman said their team was focused on ensuring each stay was a positive experience for guests, hosts and the wider community.
“Issues like this are rare, but when they do happen, we take them seriously,” a spokesman said.
“The guest has been issued a full refund and the host reminded of their responsibilities as part of Airbnb’s hosting standards.”
The City of Perth and Consumer Protection have been contacted for comment.
