Victorian police crack down on rule flouting

A Melbourne man has landed himself an expensive convenience store coffee after he was fined by police when caught driving more than 30km to get his caffeine hit.

The man, who travelled from Dandenong to South Yarra to get the drink, was among 88 others fined in the past 24 hours for blatant breaches of the chief health officer’s COVID-19 restrictions.

Six men were also fined after they were found in a short-term rental property on the Mornington Peninsula.

They told police they were there for a work-related meeting, but when officers arrived they found them drinking alcohol and watching television.

Four others from the Wyndham area were also fined after they were busted in a car at a vehicle checkpoint on their way to Geelong to go fishing.

A number of Victorians who have tested positive to coronavirus will also be referred to police after they were not at home when doorknocked by the defence force and health department staff.

Premier Daniel Andrews said 30 teams visited 269 homes on Wednesday, and some family members admitted the positive case was at work.

“They will be referred to Victoria Police,” the Premier said.

“To have found even one person who has disregarded their diagnosis and instead decided to go to work is very disappointing.

“If you're a positive case, then you need to be at home and you need to be isolating, and that is a very important message.”

It comes after police dramatically arrested coronavirus conspiracist Eve Black on Wednesday afternoon after she boasted about breaching a checkpoint at Bunyip in Melbourne’s southeast last week.

Officers were forced to smash her window when the 28-year-old Warrandyte woman again refused to provide her name and address.

She was released and is expected to be charged on summons with traffic offences, failing to produce her licence, failing to provide her name and address, and breaches of directives from the chief health officer.

Police have handed out 1960 infringements – at least $3.23 million in fines – since stage three restrictions were reinstated in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire on July 8.

At least 152 of those have been given to people for failing to wear a face covering.
