Melbourne lockdown: Teenage boy fined for virus breach after evading police
A teen accused of evading police at high speed in Melbourne’s west has also been slapped with a $1652 penalty for breaching virus restrictions.
A teenage boy has been fined for breaching coronavirus restrictions after allegedly evading police at high speed and running red lights in Melbourne’s west.
Police were called to Holland Cres in Truganina about 11.50pm on Tuesday to reports of a group of men acting suspiciously.
When they arrived two people drove off in a BMW before it was seen allegedly travelling at high speed and failing to stop at red lights.
The BMW was eventually spotted in Quarrion Court in Hoppers Crossing about 12.40am on Wednesday, and two occupants got out of the car and ran from police.
The driver, a 16-year-old boy from Truganina, was arrested after a short foot chase.
He was charged with reckless conduct endangering serious injury, dangerous driving, driving at a dangerous speed and unlicensed driving and was bailed to face a children’s court at a later date.
His accomplice managed to get away and remains on the run.
The teenager was also slapped with a $1652 fine for breaching the chief health officer’s coronavirus directions.
Among the other 103 fines issued across the past 24 hours for breaches of the chief health officer’s restrictions were three people gathered to celebrate a birthday on the Mornington Peninsula.
Four others were also fined after police found them in a car and confirmed none of them lived at the same address.
Of the 103 fines, 33 were given to people who failed to wear a face covering while out of the house.
Police have handed out more than 1872 infringements – at least $3.09 million in fines – since stage three restrictions were reinstated in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire on July 8.
At least 126 of those have been given to people for failing to wear a face covering.
