A young woman fatally shot by police in Melbourne last week helped organise a holiday to Bali for the mother she would go on to kill.

At least one police officer opened fire on Carly Pirronelli at her mother Joanne Perry’s Lower Plenty home on Friday night after she stabbed Ms Perry to death.

Friends have described how the mental state of Pirronelli, 26, had declined due to relationship issues and legal worries over the past 12 months.

One source close to the 26-year-old recently told news.com.au the incident shocked those her knew her well.

“This was not Carly,” they said.

Social media posts reveal just two years ago Pirronelli reached out to the Bali Bogans page to ask advice about her mother’s pending trip to the Indonesian island.

“Hey guys, so my mum and her partner are looking to head to Bali in the next month and haven’t (been) overseas for a many years so looking to find one of the best resorts even at $100+ a night in the middle of Legian or Kuta x,” she wrote.

In another post on the same page in January 2023, Pirronelli asked for recommendations on the best psychic or medium in Bali.

“I believe in psychics and am looking for a reading,” she said.

Homicide Squad detectives are piecing together the events that led to the deaths of both Ms Perry and Pirronelli on March 8.

One friend described her as a “beautiful person” but said it was clear her mental health was “spiralling” in recent months.

The man, who asked not to be named, said his family had asked her to a dinner scheduled for the night after she died and were going to ask her to move in.

“We wanted to show her the love and care that she deserved. And get her back on the straight and narrow.”

Pirronelli, 26, faced court over an alleged home invasion in Kingsbury during the last 12 months but the charge was dropped by prosecutors.

She was also due to face Wodonga Magistrates’ Court next month on unrelated matters.

On Saturday, Acting Superintendent Scott Colson said the incident was an “absolute tragedy” for police, the community and the victims.

Officers responded to triple-0 calls from neighbours who initially told police the young woman was setting her mother on fire.

“They’ve called on the daughter to drop the knife, however she continued to stab the mother, and the members, from what I understand, were left with no other choice but then to shoot her,” he said.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad are investigating Friday’s incident with oversight from the Professional Standards Command.
