Shopping centre shut down after group of teens with a machete stormed shops

Police descended on a shopping centre after a group of teens, one reportedly with a machete, attacked three people.

Shoppers were forced to barricade inside shops after three people were allegedly assaulted by a group of machete-wielding teenagers.

Police swarmed the Bayside Shopping Centre at Frankston, south of Melbourne, about 10.50am Tuesday following reports a group of teenagers were inside with knives.

It is understood customers rushed into stores and were barricades inside, as the group ran through the centre.

Police have said it is believed one boy was holding an “edged weapon”.

The teenager is believed to have cut his own hand and flee the scene.

Police found the weapon in a nearby bin.

The Herald Sun reports two male offenders allegedly assaulted three shoppers just before 11am. All three sustained minor injuries but did not require treatment.

One of the youths were reportedly seen wielding a machete, with witnesses pleading with the boy to “throw the knife away”.

Witnesses reported one of the injured people was protected by staff at Pandora, who barricaded the victim inside the store

Other witnesses took to social media to speak about what they had seen.

“My partner was walking down and all the doors were shut,” one user wrote on Facebook.

“He saw the kids with the knife and another kid that was bleeding everywhere.”

A Victorian Police spokesman said officers responded to reports of teenagers “causing trouble”.

“During the incident, it is believed one boy had an edged weapon,” the spokesman said.

“Officers attended the scene and located an edged weapon in a nearby bin.”

Police claim no one was injured during the incident and that inquiries are ongoing.
