A competitor has died at the popular Royal Adelaide Show woodchopping event as shocked spectators watched on.

Paramedics were called to the woodchopping arena, in the Wayville site’s southwestern corner, just before 4.30pm Saturday.

Authorities said the “veteran competitor” had gone into a cardiac arrest.

Despite paramedics’ efforts at the scene, the “middle-aged” man died.

Show organisers cancelled last night’s woodchopping events. Shows are expected to resume today. Police are preparing a report for the Coroner.
