SUPERMARKET giant Aldi wants to open a store at Hawthorn, in Adelaide’s inner south east.

The discount supermarket chain has approached the state’s peak planning authority to oversee its plan to open a store on the corner of Belair and Angas roads, just 150m from Mitcham Square shopping centre.

Aldi is yet to lodge its development application but a Development Assessment Commission (DAC) report includes the German company’s plan to build a 1600 sq m supermarket on the site.

And Aldi’s SA managing director Viktor Jakupec today confirmed his company had purchased the land at Hawthorn, on the corner of 198 Belair Road.

“The acquisition of this site in the inner south of Adelaide is exciting progress for us,” he said.

Mr Jakupec said the plan was to submit a development application for the site in the next few months.

He said the opening date for the planned new store was dependent on the outcome of this application, as well as the store’s construction.

In October last year, the supermarket giant revealed its plans for 11 new stores across Adelaide — at Seaford Heights, Kilburn, Parafield Gardens, Blakeview, Hallett Cove, Woodcroft, Gilles Plains, Salisbury, Modbury, St Agnes and Noarlunga. Adelaide.

Development applications have since been lodged for 16 stores - part of an overall plan for 50 new stores across South Australia.

The development at Hawthorn, the first in Adelaide’s south east, is estimated to be worth $5 million, and includes a basement-level carpark.

Under planning reforms brought in last year, the state co-ordinator-general, Jim Hallion, can declare projects worth more than $3 million be assessed by the independent DAC.

Mr Hallion has written to Mitcham Council advising DAC will oversee Aldi’s plan.

Locations where development applications have already been lodged include Woodcroft, Hallett Cove, Noarlunga and St Agnes.

Work has also started on a distribution centre at Regency Park.

According to Aldi, each store will employ between 15 and 20 people, and it expects to invest about $300 million in SA over the next few years.

Mitcham councillor Adrian Rosevear has expressed concerns the council won’t get a say on the plan, and expects it will be opposed by residents.

He said there were already parking issues around the Mitcham Square Shopping Centre, which is 150m from the proposed Aldi site.

As reported in the Mitcham & Hills Messenger last week, the council is considering parking restrictions in streets nearby Mitcham Square after an increase in complaints about congestion.

Councillors and residents say the introduction of paid parking at the centre in 2013 had increased the number of motorists parking on the streets.

At its meeting last night, after the paper’s presstime, the council was set to decide whether or not to introduce increased parking restrictions in the area.
