A TEENAGE boy has been caught in possession of what are believed to be magic mushrooms in the Adelaide Hills.

Police spoke to a Mount Barker boy, 15, just after 9am on Sunday when he was spotted with the mushrooms.

The teen was issued with a drug diversion notice.

Two other youths, who were on the scene, ran from police.

Magic mushrooms are classified as a controlled plant and it is illegal to possess, consume, harvest or sell them.

It is also an offence to possess or supply instructions relating to the cultivation or harvesting of magic mushrooms, including electronic instructions.

Hills Fleurieu Police Inspector Glen Sickerdick warned ingesting unidentified mushrooms could be fatal.

“Not only is it against the law to harvest magic mushrooms but people should be aware that an incorrectly identified mushroom could be toxic,” he said.

In April, SA Health issued a warning about potentially fatal Death Cap mushrooms growing in the Adelaide Hills region.
