The news of the passing of seven-year-old Matthew Trinkle, who was struck by a car on private property in Lobethal last month, has left the close-knit community in mourning.
The Trinkle family, known for owning the esteemed Lobethal Bakery, announced the heartbreaking development through a heartfelt social media post, revealing that young Matthew, affectionately known as “Pepi,” had succumbed to his injuries.
In a sombre message shared on the bakery’s Facebook page, the family conveyed their grief and the details of Matthew’s funeral, scheduled for Tuesday.
“We will be closing all our stores from 1pm, Tues 5th Sep., to celebrate the life of Matthew (aka Pepi),” the post read.
The bakery’s six locations will temporarily shutter their doors as close family and friends gather at the Lobethal Lutheran Church to bid farewell to Matthew.
The outpouring of support from the community has been overwhelming, with more than 100 members expressing their condolences on the post.
One commenter wrote, “Our love goes out to all of Pepi’s family and friends; he always had such a beautiful, cheeky smile. You are all in our thoughts and prayers.”
Another added, “We are so sorry to hear this sad news. Condolences to you all at this sad time; you are all in our thoughts and prayers️. Rest in peace Matthew. Love from the Palma family x.”
Matthew’s critical condition resulted from a tragic accident on August 21 at a Lobethal property.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on Valley View Lane at 4.30pm, and Matthew was subsequently flown for medical attention. Reports suggest that a family member was behind the wheel of the vehicle involved in the incident. The devastating news shook the tightly-knit neighbourhood, with a neighbour describing the Trinkle family as “beautiful people” and expressing solidarity with them during this challenging period.
The family previously requested privacy while navigating the tragedy.
Lobethal Bakery, a cherished institution in the region since its establishment in 1975, continues to be run by the Trinkle family.
The bakery’s website highlights the collaboration of brothers Albert, Peter, and Paul Trinkle, along with their wives and children.
