SCHOOL’S finally in for Matilda and headmistress Miss Trunchbull is ready to educate Adelaide audiences about the hit musical, which starts preview performances on Sunday.

Readers can also take home music from the acclaimed show on a special Matilda the Musical soundtrack sampler CD featuring comedian Tim Minchin’s songs, free with The Advertiser and Sunday Mail next week.

Actor James Millar, who plays the cruel and very muscular Miss Trunchbull, said more than a million people had already seen the show in Australia.

“It’s been an amazing ride since the very first audition, which was two-and-a-half years ago,’’ he said. “It’s been a wonderful success and keeps being thrilling.’’

He described Miss Trunchbull as “a jealous, bitter, rage-filled monster’’ who calls her students “maggots”.

“The thing that’s so fun about the character of Matilda is that she is this tiny little person up against this gargantuan bully, and she is not afraid.’’

Based on UK children’s author Roald Dahl’s book, Matilda was created by the Royal Shakespeare Company with songs by Australian actor-musician Minchin.

And it has been an international hit, winning seven Olivier Awards in the UK and five Tony Awards on Broadway.

“It’s as good for adults as it is for children — it’s dark, it’s funny, it’s colourful, it’s full of hope,’’ Mr Millar said. “It’s got adult ideas within it, as well as stuff that the kids relate to.’’

Matilda has previews at the Festival Theatre from Sunday ahead of Friday’s official opening night, and runs until July 16. Book at BASS.
