Man charged with murder over fatal stabbing at Coober Pedy
Police on Friday recovered a knife they allege was used in a fatal stabbing at Coober Pedy on Thursday night.
A man will face court charged with murder after allegedly stabbing another man in the state’s Far North.
Police and emergency services rushed to Saint Nicholas St, Coober Pedy, just after 10pm on Thursday after a man was stabbed.
Despite administering CPR for about half an hour, officers and paramedics were unable to save the victim – a 37-year-old Coober Pedy man.
Police arrested a 27-year-old Coober Pedy man over the incident and charged him with murder yesterday.
The man has also been charged with aggravated assault cause harm and breaching an intervention order after allegedly assaulting his female partner.
The suspect has been refused bail and was expected to appear in the Port Augusta Magistrates Court on Monday.
Major Crime detectives and forensic officers flew to the scene, where they recovered a knife allegedly used in the attack in bushes nearby.
One witness, who did not wish to be named, told The Advertiser the stabbing occurred when “a guy stepped in to stop a fight”.
“There was yelling and screaming, that’s what alerted me to it,” he said.
“There was an altercation between a boyfriend and a girlfriend and the uncle stepped in and got stabbed.”
The witness said the incident occurred in front of a group of people, believed to be family members.
“There was quite a few members of the family there,” he said.
He said they were understandably “very stressed” at the scene.
A local resident, who did not wish to be named, described the victim as “very friendly and a good lad”.
