THE proprietor of an iconic Barossa Valley hotel does not know when the kitchen will be back up and running after it was gutted by a fire on Saturday night.

Firefighters were called to the Tanunda Hotel on Murray St when the alarm went off about 1.30am on Sunday.

Smoke was spotted coming from the kitchen and a storage area at the back of the building.

Quick action from firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the pub and accommodation but its kitchen was completely destroyed.

Power, gas and water to the hotel has been turned off while guests in their rooms on the second floor have been moved to another apartment building.

The hotel will remain shut on Sunday with builders expected to visit the site early in the week to survey the damage.

The cause has been confirmed as non-suspicious.
