Adelaide's lunchtime update - July 5, 2019

A man has been charged with attempted murder after what police allege was a savage attack with a shovel at an Aldinga Beach home.

A man who lives at the same Storey Ave house has been arrested and charged with attempted murder over the incident.

The alleged attack happened after 9.30pm on Thursday.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene and found a man aged in his sixties with “significant head injuries”.

It is understood he had about three gash wounds to his head.

The man was taken to Flinders Medical Centre, where he remained in a stable condition.

Police arrested a 28-year-old man at the scene and charged him with attempted murder.

He appeared in the Christies Beach Magistrates Court yesterday and was remanded in custody to next face court in October.

Witnesses say the victim is lucky to be alive.

The injured man staggered across the road to neighbour Ernie Jones’ house to seek help after the alleged attack. “I was just laying down in bed and I heard someone banging on my back door,” Mr Jones said.

“I got up and by the time I got to my kitchen, I saw him standing there.

“He looked just like Freddy Krueger.

“Blood was everywhere, coming down the sides of his neck.”

Mr Jones said the man was “shaking like a leaf”.

“I said ‘Just sit here’ and I rang the police.”

Mr Jones described the assault as “cowardly”.

“(The victim is) harmless,” he said. “He (The alleged victim) rides to the shop every day on the bike. He wouldn’t hurt a fly, the poor bugger.”

Mr Jones said the incident had unnerved him.

“From now on, I’m locking my back door,” he said.

Another neighbour, Susannah Allen, was shocked such a violent incident the incident had occurred in her street.

“(The victim) must have opened his home to this man,” she said. “He is a pretty friendly, clean-living fellow so I have no idea what’s happened.

“I’m so glad Ernie was home – he probably saved his life.”

Ms Allen said Storey Ave was home to mostly families and older people and was usually a quiet street.

“It’s horrible to think something like this (happened) in our street,” she said.

Anyone with information on the incident should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
