Now a month old, Adelaide Zoo’s newest white-cheeked gibbon is growing fast.

The youngster spends most of its time snuggled up to doting mum, Viet, and is beginning to interact with its playful family, including dad Remus and older sisters Nhu and Tien.

The baby’s gender remains unknown and is not expected to be confirmed until it starts to build its confidence and move away from mum.

However, the zoo is giving South Australians the chance to submit a non gender-specific name that would best suit its cheeky personality.

Senior primate keeper Jodie Ellen said the gibbon was becoming much more curious about ts surroundings, and looks lovingly at its mum and sisters.

“They love the little one,” Ms Ellen said.

“Especially the oldest of the sisters (Nhu).

“It will be a year or two until she goes off to start her own family.”

The gibbon’s sisters’ names were inspired by its south east Asian origin, where the species is critically endangered in the wild.

Readers can use the Adelaide Zoo Facebook page to submit their name suggestion by 5pm on Sunday, January 22.

The winner will get a behind the scenes Meet the Primates experience for two.
