DIE-HARD Foo Fighters fans got the shock of their lives when Dave Grohl rolled up in a white stretch limo outside the band’s show at Hindmarsh Stadium on Tuesday night. Or did he?

HE turned up with his flowing locks, rock star sunnies and an adoring entourage but he wasn’t the real deal - he was just a pretender.

That wasn’t immediately clear to the hordes of fans who flocked to get a glimpse of who appeared to be rock god Dave Grohl in a white stretch limo circling outside his Foo Fighters’ Hindmarsh Stadium concert on Tuesday night.

That’s just the kind of caper you’d expect from the fun-loving Grohl, but it wasn’t the legendary rock star.

So, who was it?

Turns out the interloper was 31-year-old Prospect muso Mark Curtis, who bears a striking resemblance to the Foo Fighters frontman.

“I’ve been told I look like him since I’ve been growing facial hair,” Mr Curtis told The Advertiser .

“Whenever his look syncs up with mine is when I get it; basically since he started having the long hair and beard.”

Curtis says after years of being mistaken for Grohl, he and his friends thought they would put his likeness to the test and came up with the idea to hire a limo and drive around the Foo Fighters venue.

“It was something that we’d joked about a while ago and then last week after a gig we got talking and everybody was like ‘oh you’re totally doing this’,” Mr Curtis said.

“I couldn’t even afford to go to the concert, so I couldn’t afford the limo, so my mates all chipped in (and) paid for it.”

And even the diehard fans were fooled.

“We did a couple of laps of the venue and people started noticing so I was saying to them things like ‘you’re the best’ and ‘enjoy the concert’ in my best US accent.

You’re not Dave. So who are you? Yeah, who are you??

“After a couple of times, people started getting to the limo and shook hands.”

“I tried to think if I was seeing a concert what would I want the reaction to be?”

While he is hoping that people see the funny side, Mr Curtis admits to feeling a little guilty after the stunt.

“People were getting emotional (and then) it kind of stopped being funny,” he said.

“But the way I look at it is, I’m pretty much to Dave Grohl what Santa’s helpers are to him. When he can’t be there in person, I’m there to spread a little Dave Grohl cheer.”

And if he had the chance to send his look-a-like a message, Mr Curtis is clear:

“Dave you’re a handsome man and thank you for all the harassment at pubs and the occasional beers you’ve got me. Keep looking after our good name. Also, try to stay out of any sort of scandal so I don’t have to change my look.”

The Foo Fighters will play their next show at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium tonight.

Mark Curtis And The Flannelettes will next be seen playing at the Adelaide Espresso Martini Festival in Rymill Park on February 2.

And no, there aren’t any Foo Fighters songs on the setlist.
