7 NEWS: Children removed from mother after horrible living conditions discovered

A MOTHER has been reported and her two young daughters have been removed from her care after they were found living among piles of rubbish and dirty nappies in an Adelaide home.

Police were called to the northeastern suburbs home by neighbours who were concerned for the welfare of the girls at the property.

Exclusive footage obtained by Seven News showed the inside of the home littered with dirty clothes while garbage could be seen in every room.

Neighbours had reportedly been raising concerns about the welfare of the children inside for some time but told Seven News calls to authorities were ignored or unanswered.

Police officers, including detectives and crime scene officers, as well as Department for Child Protection, council and other agency personnel attended the home on March 27.

The girls, both aged under 10 years old, were removed and placed into care.

Their 32-year-old mother was reported for two counts of failing to provide for the children.

She will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

Michael Topley and partner Kristy-Lee Dixon found the girls living in the squalid conditions of the northeastern suburbs home last week after going over to the property to collect money that was owed.

When Mr Topley arrived, he said the girl’s mother was passing in and out of consciousness and that she was allegedly high on drugs.

The pair said they were hit by a foul stench as soon as they entered the home and the Department of Child Protection was called.

Mr Topley said the house was filled with rubbish and he found it hard to believe anyone lived there.

“It was like a sea of garbage ... It had obviously been going on for quite some time,” he said.

The Department of Child Protection was called soon after and the girls were taken into care.

One neighbour told Seven News she had been attempting to call the department to raise her concerns for some time but was reportedly told there was nothing they could do.
