A man has been charged with murder after allegedly failing to call emergency services following the deaths of two people who had “adverse reactions” from drugs they’d taken in a suburban home.

Emergency services were called to the Kentville St property in Mitchelton in Brisbane’s north at 8.50am on Thursday, finding the two people inside unresponsive.

A 61-year-old Keperra man and a 35-year-old Mitchelton woman were later declared dead at the scene.

A 41-year-old Greenslopes man has since been charged with two counts of murder with the aggravating feature of reckless indifference and two counts each of supply dangerous drugs and possess dangerous drugs.

Ferny Grove Criminal Investigation Branch Senior Sergeant Mick Jones said police would allege the man had supplied the pair with drugs hours before their death.

“He also allegedly failed to contact emergency services when the man and the woman had an adverse reaction to the substances,” Sergeant Jones said.

“The investigation that we’ve conducted indicate he bought the drugs to the premises and provided them to those there.

“He was there for the duration (of the drug taking).”

It will be alleged the pair were unconscious when police arrived but later died. One of the woman’s four children called triple-0 on Thursday morning.

Sergeant Jones said the 41-year-old man was at the property when police arrived and assisted them with their inquiries.

He then “voluntarily accompanied” police to the station for further questioning before being charged.

“When the job was tasked and police and QAS came to the scene very quickly, he was out the front of the residence,” Sergeant Jones said.

“He’s co-operative with police and he voluntarily wished to assist us with the investigation moving forward.”

When asked if the circumstances would have been any different if the man had called triple-0, Sergeant Jones replied: “It certainly would have helped.”

“By the time triple-0 had been called, it was past that point.”

Police will further allege the man had moved a car belonging to one of his “friends” before returning to the property. That car was also now being treated as a crime scene, Sergeant Jones said.

While police are still waiting to receive the toxicology and autopsy reports, Sergeant Jones said they were “pretty confident” some of the drugs consumed by the pair included cocaine and amphetamines.

However, Sergeant Jones said he didn’t believe there was further risk to the community, and it was unlikely these drugs were from a bad batch.

Police will allege the 41-year-old man had also consumed drugs with the pair but might not have used the same drugs as the other two because he didn’t have an “adverse reaction”.

“I don’t know the exact way the whole situation transpired,” Sergeant Jones said.

“He certainly indicated they used drugs on that evening … whether they all used the same drugs (is unclear).”

Sergeant Jones said he was also unable to comment on the quantity or quality of the drugs that caused the deaths until police received the toxicology reports.

He said the pair allegedly had the adverse reaction to the drugs “reasonably quickly” after they were consumed.

He confirmed none of the three was in an intimate relationship with one another but instead “loose associates” or “friends”.

Sergeant Jones said the four children were now in the care of their father – who does not live at the property – and grandmother following the “traumatic situation”.

The man was due to appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on Friday.
