Cops take-down speargun-armed man on Ocean Street, Maroochydore
Wild footage shows cops taking down a man who was allegedly in possession of a bizarre weapon on an Australian street.
Wild footage shows police taking down a man allegedly wielding a speargun on the streets of a popular Sunshine Coast night-life precinct.
Officers received reports of a man armed with the strange weapon at about 1.20am, before they arrested and charged a 56-year-old Maroochydore man on December 21, The Courier Mail reports.
It followed an alleged assault earlier that morning.
Shared on Instagram, on a local community page, the video shows two police officers on top of a man on a sidewalk on Ocean Street, before a third officer launches himself on top of the group and pins down the person’s arms and legs.
An officer is then able to extract a long rodlike object from the person’s hands.
Bewildered onlookers can be seen walking past, while one of those behind the camera exclaims in confusion: “What is that? Is that a spear?”
“I think he’s got a spear gun,” another onlooker said.
Spearguns are underwater fishing devices that are built to discharge barbs and harpoons to catch sea creatures.
People online took to the comments to express amusement at the irony of the incident occurring on Ocean Street.
“Shouldn’t have called it Ocean Street if they didn’t want people showing up with there fishing gear,” one person wrote.
”He was trying to get all the catfishers,” another wrote.
Other commenters applauded the efforts of police.
The man has been charged with one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, serious assault while armed, common assault, and contravening a police requirement.
He is expected to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates on December 23.
Spearguns are known to be dangerous if not handled properly.
Earlier this month, a NSW woman was severely injured after a speargun went off in her cupboard and shot the barb into her neck.
