Man arrested with speargun on Ocean St

Footage has emerged of police officers tackling a man armed with a spear gun in a popular Sunshine Coast night-life precinct.

Police arrested and charged a 56-year-old Maroochydore man after an alleged assault on Ocean St in the early hours of December 21, a Queensland Police spokeswoman said.

Patrolling officers had received reports of a man armed with a speargun about 1.20am.

Police alleged the man had threatened a security officer but no one was physically injured during the incident.

The man was quickly located on Ocean St and officers moved to secure the speargun, the spokeswoman said.

He has been taken into custody and had police bail refused.

A video emerged on a Sunshine Coast community page on Instagram depicting the arrest, with two officers holding down the man and a third quickly wrestling the speargun out of his grip.

Officers can then be seen pulling the man’s arms behind his back to arrest him.

The man has been charged with one count each of going armed so as to cause fear, serious assault while armed, common assault and contravening a police requirement.

He is expected to appear in the Maroochydore Magistrates on December 23.
