Melbourne man calls police after spotting crying woman
A man was driving along a quiet road in Melbourne when he spotted an empty car and a woman screaming for help. Here’s why he chose to ignore her and call police.
A young man who saw a woman lying next to her car in agony screaming for help chose to ignore her due to fears he could have been a victim of a carjacking.
Aaron was driving down a quiet suburban road in Caulfield South, south-east of Melbourne’s CBD, with his girlfriend earlier this week when he spotted a car with no headlights on.
“This car was parked strategically on a bend in the middle of the road,” he claimed in a since-deleted TikTok.
The man said he approached the empty car and noticed the driver’s side door was wide open and a woman was lying on the floor holding her leg and screaming.
“She was telling me to come outside, she was screaming ‘please help me, come outside and help me, please I’m dying’,” he revealed.
The man said he had a “really bad gut feeling” and decided to drive further down the street to call police and ambulances instead of getting out of his car to help the woman himself.
When police arrived, he claims they were unable to find the woman on the street.
He told news.com.au that officers stressed he did “the right thing” by exercising caution and calling emergency services.
In an odd twist, Victoria Police said they had found a woman who was genuinely injured and in need of assistance.
“Police received a report from a member of the public after a woman was located injured on Filbert Street in Caulfield South shortly after 8pm on 5 July,” police said.
“The community member called 000 and left the scene.
“Officers attended and located the woman at her nearby address.
“She was seeking assistance after her car began rolling when she got out of her vehicle, causing her to injure her leg.”
Despite the man misreading the situation, the video resonated online - with dozens of others sharing their own horror stories.
“Something like this happened to a dear friend back in 2002,” wrote one person.
“It was a woman with a crying baby, he doesn’t remember anything after jumping out of the car and was found by the garbage truck in the middle of the street unconscious head bleeding. Lost his car and got a cracked skull.”
“This has been going on for years in Sydney. Never get out or unlock doors for anyone,” added another.
Earlier this year, eerie dashcam footage emerged of a suspected carjacking attempt.
In that incident, a driver captured the moment a woman jumped directly in front of their car in Browns Plains, south of Brisbane.
The driver reversed back as a man ran from the other side of the road to the woman’s side, yelling at the driver to stop as they sped away from the suspicious scene.
“Dashcam footage of alleged insurance fraud incident,” Dash Cam Owners Australia wrote after sharing the clip.
“There were several people approaching from behind the vehicle instantly after the incident, driver fled due to risk of carjacking/suspecting a fraudulent claim at 3am in Browns Plains.”
A Queensland Police spokeswoman said police were “aware of a video circulating on social media where a female walks out in front of a vehicle and is struck on Browns Plains Road at Browns Plains on May 2”.
“The driver reported the incident to police shortly after the incident,” she said.
“Police attended the location but were unable to locate those involved. No formal complaint has been made to police at this time however investigations are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the incident.”
