Images of a huge star are going viral but there’s a wild reason that women are feeling triggered by these carefree images.

COMMENT

Images and videos of boxer and former reality television star Tommy Fury partying are going viral and women are triggered because of what it represents.

So why?

Fury is engaged to influencer Molly Mae, who has more than 7 million Instagram followers and has become a social media force.

The pair met on the UK’s 5th season of Love Island, and have since become a celebrity couple that share their lives online.

Credit to them, they have managed to stay together for much longer than most reality television couples.

In January 2023, Mae and Fury, both 24, welcomed their daughter Bambi amid much fanfare.

Just 11 months later a video of Fury partying with singer Chris Brown went viral on social media.

The pair were dancing and having fun in a nightclub in Dubai alongside a group of men, while Mae was reportedly back home in England taking care of their young daughter... not out on the town cutting loose.

Naturally, speculation amped up that two may have called it quits, but Mae responded to critics in an emotional YouTube clip, in which she appeared to confirm that her and Fury were still a couple.

She said she didn’t find it “annoying” to have her relationship questioned all the time because she understood her life was in the “public” eye.

“It kind of sounds bad but you sign up for it in this job. I really don’t care what is said about me, Tommy, my relationship. It sounds like a cliche, but you do massively grow a thick skin like an elephant. I’m immune,” she explained.

Mae added that everyone has to “deal’ with things in their relationships and that things weren’t always going to be “perfect”, but she said she was “fine.”

While Mae might be fine, the women on the internet are not and instead are enraged on her behalf or feeling upset because of their own life experiences with men.

Somehow Fury’s partying videos have become the target for pent-up female rage.

Aussie podcast co-hosts Michelle Andrews, and Zara McDonald discussed the videos of Fury partying on their podcast Shameless, and Andrews admitted seeing Fury partying was her worst “fear.”

Andrews said that she doesn’t want to “push” her anxieties onto a couple she doesn’t know but she couldn’t help how the clips made her feel and what they represented about gender roles when it comes to parenting.

“Watching a young woman become a mother and then often be left alone while her partner’s life remains unchanged is something that makes me feel panicky,” she explained.

McDonald agreed and said that the “dynamics” we see play out between Mae and Fury are the product of a larger system that allows men’s lives to go on “unchanged” after becoming dads.

Online there’s a loud conversation coming from women who find videos of Fury partying frustrating.

Among the comments are women who point out that he has a baby at home, while some express that they feel “sorry” for Mae.

Others have gone further, saying that men should be at home taking “care” of their children.

The conversation goes beyond women just being invested in the couple and the melodrama that their online lives provide.

Women are sharing their fears that having children will mean their lives will change forever while their partner’s lives won’t.

If even Mae, who has the glossy rich influencer life is grappling with this... is anyone exempt?

“When talking with partners about kids, I’ve always said, ‘I wouldn’t mind being a dad, but you couldn’t pay me enough to be a mom,” one shared.

“You can have the most attentive involved father and it will still feel like your life has changed and his hasn’t on days,” another claimed.

“I also trusted my husband wouldn’t do that … and yet he did! Mostly because they get praise for just being there, while we get only judged,” one wrote.

Psychologist Carly Dober said there’s been such a reaction because of what the clips represent to women.

“There may be such a visceral reaction because, in part, some of these mothers wish that they had some of the freedom that was afforded their partners, their friend’s partners, and what this image represents speaks a lot to their experiences,” she said.

Ms Dober said that she speaks to women all the time that are dealing with this very imbalence.

“It is true that even in a relatively progressive country like Australia, birthing partners or mothers still do the lion’s share of the work. In my practice I see and meet with a lot of women who feel like there is not a true reciprocity in the parent partnership. A lot of women are also told that they ‘can have it all’, and their lives won’t change ‘that much’- but we know that that is not true for all,” she said.
