Woman’s shock at amount of dirt after washing her Oodie

A video of a woman deep cleaning her Oodie has gone viral after it showed just how much dirt and grime was hiding in her fluffy garment.

Woman’s ‘super gross’ oodie discovery

Oodies have quick become the ultimate winter snuggle staple and have understandably been a huge hit during lockdown.

In case you’re unacquainted, a hooded blanket (also known as a blanket hoodie or by the brand name Oodie) is basically an oversized hoodie sweatshirt that’s lined with super-soft fleece.

However, because they are so soft and snuggly, some people easily go weeks without washing them.

But Oodie owners may want to reconsider that time frame after a woman from Adelaide got a nasty surprise when she went to soak her wearable blanky.

The woman, who goes by the name of Gemma-Kaye on TikTok, shared a video on the social media platform as a “reminder” to “deep clean your Oodies”.

In the viral clip, Gemma could be seen deep cleaning her Oodie in the tub.

She said it was her first time cleaning it and was shocked at how “super gross” the water was from the dirt and grime.

“Ew look at that water,” she said, before sharing more footage of the water after an hour.

“Yuck wtf is that.”

It showed the water to look brown in colour.

She then tossed it into the washing machine with some detergent, before later hanging it on the clothes line looking all “nice and clean”.

Gemma’s video has been viewed 2.4 million times with more than 7800 people commenting on her post, with plenty of discussion surrounding the washing time frame.

“Why are people not washing these for a whole month,” one woman asked.

“I never take mine off,” one person responded, while a third said: “It takes one day to wash and dry it.”

One person admitted having never washed their Oodie before adding it “looks surprisingly clean”, while another confessed to having never washed theirs in one year.

The general reaction to those who haven’t washed the garment was “ew”.

Others pointed out they need to be washed frequently as they’re just like a dressing gown.

“For gods sake! Chuck it in the washing machine every week at least,” one disgusted woman advised.

If you toss your Oodie in the washing machine, it’s recommended to use a gentle cycle and only mild detergent (approved for wool/silk).

According to Oodie.com, you should avoid mixing your oodie with other colours and don’t tumble dry.

“However, if you really want to best preserve the cuddliness and softness of the Oodie for as long as possible, we recommend hand washing it in cold water,” it states on its site.
