The famous people are in Australia and we shouldn’t complain about it

There’s been some big famous people spotted prancing in Australia and we need to discuss why this is happening.

OPINION

The celebrities have all arrived in Australia, and amen, this is just what our country needs because we were running out of famous people to talk about.

For two years, there was a pandemic, no famous person travelled to Australia, and we had to settle for the odd sighting of Russell Crowe looking fed-up or Karl Stefanovic strolling around the lower north shore in shorts.

Things got so dire we decided to promote Christian Wilkins to celebrity status, and we’ve been living with that choice ever since.

That was it.

There was a brief period when we all got very excited about Shannon Noll’s gym photos, and at some point, things got so harrowing we decided to all watch The Masked Singer.

Sure, we had that great moment in 2021 when Oscar winner Natalie Portman landed in Australia and presumably asked pal Russell Crowe what to do.

Instead of telling her to pop down for a swim at the Great Barrier Reef, he sent her straight off to a Rabbitohs game. Seeing her petite Hollywood frame in the stands as our Aussies men went wild tackling each other was hilarious.

The lack of random celebrities has made our world dull. Sure, we relied on international celebrity news to keep us going, but it just hits differently when something happens in your home country.

I couldn’t care less about singer Charlie Puth when he was posting TikToks and releasing pop songs in America, but once he was spotted in Sydney looking awkward in Bondi, I was suddenly obsessed.

Seeing him trot the footpath of Bondi fully-clothed, well, I’ve never run faster to listen to his banger Attention.

Similarly, Sam Smith has been oversaturated these past few years, but when I saw they were spotted looking like a hipster in Sydney’s Redfern, I was suddenly ready to spend $80 on some Smith merchandise.

If Smith has been to Redfern, and I’ve also been to Redfern that makes us acquaintances right?

The star spotting hasn’t ended there.

Jude Law, who I haven’t thought about since he cheated on Sienna Miller, was recently spotted in Queensland singing along to Hey Jude by Paul McCartney.

He was doing exactly what any self-respecting Jude would do in such a situation, and I’d join any fan club about him. I think I even forgive him for upsetting Sienna.

Even Margot Robbie being recently spotted in Australia again is a thrill.

Sure, she’s been practically everywhere promoting Barbie, and I didn’t think I could be interested in the blonde bombshell, but seeing her walk around Rose Bay, when I’ve walked around Rose Bay.

I’m chuffed and excited, demanding her back on Neighbours, where she’s always belonged.

There’s something that hits different about seeing famous people on our home turf.

Partly, it is because they always look so ridiculous; we don’t have a sexy boulevard, we just footpaths usually with a few tradies crammed onto them trying to fix something.

Naturally, famous people look silly in such dowdy spots in their designer outfits, but it is mostly exciting to see famous people in places you’ve been.

It makes them suddenly feel relevant to your life; sure, Smith and I have nothing in common, but now I know they have a soft spot for Redfern, and I suddenly feel an affection for them.

This is no shade on our local celebrities.

They’ve been doing their best to keep us entertained during the pandemic, and honourable mention goes to Cody Simpson for randomly returning to swimming. Still, there’s no denying seeing the stars back in Australia is fun.

It is the treat we all deserve.
