‘Justice for Cali girls’: U.S. expat says Australians ‘hate’ her accent

A California woman in Melbourne has slammed Australians for constantly making fun of her “stupid” American accent.

American expats reveal things that baffle them about Australia

An American living in Melbourne has demanded “justice” for California girls after claiming Australians always make fun of her accent.

US woman Gigi posted her frustration online earlier this week after opening up about an altercation she experienced at a party.

She explained that she was in the middle of introducing herself to everyone, when an unknown Australian man interrupted what she was saying to tell her that she sounds “so f**king stupid”.

“This has happened to me quite a bit since I moved to Australia,” she explained on the video, titled #JusticeForCaliGirls.

“I went to a party last night, and I was just introducing myself, trying to be nice to people.

“And I was a little bit tipsy, but anyways. This f**king dude just randomly interrupts me, and he says ‘you sound so f**king stupid’.

“And starts talking like this, mimicking what I was saying.”

Gigi went on to explain that this type of incident was just one of many occasions where Australians have gone out of their way to make fun how she speaks.

She added that she believes it is because she is from California that she has become more of a prominent target.

“That’s not even the first time that’s happened to me here. It’s happened so many times,” she said.

“I’m sure if you’re from Southern California and you’re a girl, and you’re cute, people probably say that s**t to you all the goddamn time.

“And honestly, hashtag justice for Callie girls. It’s a deep insecurity of mine.”

Her followers had a mix of reactions to what happened at the party.

While some blamed the man’s actions on simply “what Aussies do” and agreed that American accents were “annoying”, others shared their own experiences of getting “accent hate” from locals after moving to Australia.

“That guy was thinking what every Australian is thinking, go away” one said.

“It’s because of things like the Kardashians or that Clueless movie,” another commented.

“We had to deal with enough American accents on TV, it sounds so weird hearing it in real life.”

“People here hate American accents, I’m telling you.

“Please don’t take offence, but Aussies hate that accent and yeah we think it sounds stupid, you sound lovely though.” wrote another.

“Aussies really value humility and hate arrogance, and sometimes the Valley girl vibe comes off as arrogance.”

Others stood up for Gigi, and said it was never okay to bully another person for their accent.

“You sound so hot. I am Australian, and they are just jealous we sound like bogans, you are beautiful.” wrote one.

“Literally happens to me all the time too! Like what am I supposed to do change my accent.” commented another.

“This is Australia guys! It’s happened to me for years,” said one person.

“I’m originally from the UK so have a strong British accent and they do this to me.”

“He was probably just flirting with you,” suggested another.

“That’s the Aussie way of getting a girl’s attention.”
