US expat confused by texts from Aussie mates

An American expat living in Australia has exposed the “sad” truth she’s witnessed since moving Down Under.

Originally from New York, TikToker Ashleigh, who goes by the name @coffeeenut on the social media platform, is currently living in Tasmania for university.

But while living in Tassie, the American has been left a little “sad” about a popular baked product she claims tastes different to those back home.

In the short video, which has received 1.4 million views, Ashleigh was quick to reveal what part of Australia “does not make any sense”.

“Things in Australia that genuinely do not make any sense at all to an American who just moved – the bagels, moving on,” she said in the short clip.

Bagels traditionally in the US are topped with cream cheese and butter, or filled with blueberries. In Australia, however, people often opt for them to be part of a bacon and egg bagel roll or perhaps lashed with smashed avocado.

The expat’s shock at Australia’s take on bagels received more than 1700 comments, with many agreeing on her take of the American favourite.

“Yep, never had a good bagel that wasn’t dense,” one said of the Aussie bagel.

“Bagels are so rare here which sucks because after having them in the states I’d love to be able to get good ones here too,” another added.

“I think bagels just aren’t a thing here … try Melbourne,” another suggested.

Meanwhile, another American expat who moved from California to Australia has revealed the slang sentences used Down Under that have left her completely stumped.

Taking to her TikTok account, Jaylee – who goes by the name @jaylee.promise – said that she’s received a number of slang sentences that had left her stumped since moving abroad.

“This has been said to me so many times when I have been out,” Jaycee explained, referring to the sentence “you’re taking the piss”.

“When someone says ‘you’re taking the piss’, I’m like … they’re not asking you if you’re peeing … which is what I thought because taking a piss is peeing in America.”

Jaylee went on to explain that the sentence is actually asking whether the recipient is “joking” about something.

The next slang sentence that stumped the brunette was the four words “do you have a torch”.

“When I read this I thought to myself wow, it would be nifty to have a torch,” she said, explaining that her definition of a ‘torch’ was piece of wood lit at the tip to create a flame.

“But here, the word torch actually means flashlight.”
