Australian fitness model Emily Skye has been forced to defend a recent photo of a business trip to the US after being criticised for leaving her daughter at home.

The Gold Coast personal trainer, who is known for her successful online fitness program Emily Skye Fit, visited New York this week ahead of her campaign with Women’s Best, a nutrition and sportswear company for women.

The 34-year-old revealed her collaboration with the global business alongside an Instagram post posing in front of a billboard with her face on it in Times Square.

It also featured fellow Aussie entrepreneur and fitness model Tammy Hembrow.

“I’m on a giant billboard in Times Square for @womensbest! So grateful to be part of the Women’s Best fam. Such amazing people behind such an awesome brand,” Sky wrote in the caption.

While many of her 2.5 millions followers congratulated her on the exciting news, some criticised Skye for leaving her two-year-old daughter Mia at home in Queensland.

“Where is Mia,” one follower asked, with Skye responding “At home with dadda.”

“I was thinking this is cute but where’s Mia,” asked another fan.

However, the bizarre comments of one follower, in particular, forced Skye, who is pregnant with her second child, to fire back.

“No you should stay at home clean the house n cook like women were born to do. U dont belong in the work force, Men were made for working. U r mother n wife n should satisfy him n look after him n ur child (sic),” the shocking comment read.

Skye posted a screenshot of it to her Instagram story with the words “This is a joke right?”

It then prompted her to write a lengthy post explaining why women should never feel guilty for taking time out for themselves.

“I’ve had a lot of people criticising me for being away from Mia and are saying that it’s selfish of me,” she began the post.

“To be honest, this is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard. I’m away working so I can give my family the best life possible AND I’m also doing this for ME!

“This whole idea that doing anything for yourself is a bad thing is WRONG.”

Skye continued that women should never let anyone “tell you that you’re selfish for wanting to achieve goals for yourself”.

“You are still your own person with goals and dreams and you deserve to do things for yourself to make yourself happy. Of course our kids are always priority but our own happiness should be as well.”

She concluded the post by saying when she is happy, so is her family.

“And I’m a much better mother and partner to them,” she said.

The post, which was shared on Monday morning, has already been liked more than 21,000 times with fellow mums and women supporting her inspiring words.

“Keep doing your thing girl you are an inspiration for a lot of women,” one fan wrote.

“How wonderful would it be if people focused more on making themselves and their own family happier instead of criticising others and their lives?” said another.

“Everything you do is empowering for women,” a third wrote.

Part of the reason for Skye’s huge success and combined social media following of 12.5 million is because of her brutal honesty when it comes to fitness and being a mum.

During her pregnancy with her daughter Mia in 2018, Skye revealed the highs and also the lows.

She said everything was a battle from getting out of bed to walking to body struggles such as changes to her core and ab separation.

Known for her super shredded and strong physique, Skye never shied away from revealing the realties of pregnancy – even with her current second pregnancy, she keeps her fans updated with her journey.

Having to deal with criticism isn’t something new for Skye, who was slammed with negative comments telling her she should edit her loose belly skin and stretchmarks out her snaps.

The images were 12 months after she gave birth to Mia.

“Some people would say things like, ‘You still got skin on your belly, you should Photoshop that out’, or comment about my stretchmarks,” she told news.com.au at the time.

But she has continued to purposely post photos showing her flaws to prove no one is perfect – not even social media influencers.

“It took me many years to be confident and comfortable in my own skin, and I still have moments when I’m not, but most of the time I am,” Skye said. “Remember that everyone has insecurities no matter WHO they are. You might look at someone and think they’re ‘perfect’ but that doesn’t mean they’re confident.”
