The Block 2018: Week 4, master ensuite reveal

THE Block judges have yet again ripped into Sara and Hayden’s room reveal. It was so bad, Sara walked off the show.

The Block: Meet Sara and Hayden

HAYDEN and Sara spent $75,000 on The Block’s latest room reveal, a master ensuite, making it the most expensive bathroom in the show’s history.

But it proved to be an expensive mistake, with the judges only singing praise to their $8000 brass bathtub — and even that copped a beating.

Coming last for the third consecutive week was all a bit too much for Sara, who had a massive breakdown and walked off the show.

Here’s what happened:

HAYDEN AND SARA, NSW, APARTMENT 3, SCORE: 22

On entering the penthouse bathroom, judge Shaynna Blaze said, “Oh my God, this is amazing, have you ever seen a bath like that?” She was clearly mesmerised by the brass tub describing it as “beautiful” and a different kind of “luxury”. At this point Sara’s face was awash with relief and more than likely thinking, “Yes, of course I nailed this.”

Sadly, it wasn’t the case. At all.

Overall, the bathroom was described as a “mix of triumph and disaster”.

They went for a “royalty feel” with luxe details including a marble floor and wall, and herringbone tiles.

While the judges agreed on the tub’s beauty and positioning in the bathroom, that’s where it ended. Neale Whitaker said he didn’t think it belonged in the ensuite.

“It’s just not coming together for me in here,” Neale said. “I don’t like the choice of tile on the wall.

“I feel like I’m trying to be won over by this magnificent piece that someone is saying you’ve got to like this bathroom because of that bath, but I don’t.”

They were commended on the floor and bath work, but guest judge John McGrath, founder of McGrath Estate Agents, thought the dark tiles on the other walls closed the room in.

“They need to try to rescue this bathroom,” John said. “It has the potential to wipe out potential buyers.”

Hayden and Sara took up Shaynna’s offer to mentor them, but the feedback still sent Sara into a frenzy, throwing a massive tantrum, saying they didn’t deserve to come last.

“This is embarrassing now. We put out heart and soul into that. I don’t want to do this anymore. I am over it,” Sara yelled at a producer after judges’ feedback.

“Oh f**k this I am going mate, I am f***ing over it.

“I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to do this if we are going to come last and be embarrassed on national TV. Why would I want to do this?”

They came last on the leaderboard, if you hadn’t already picked that up.

KERRIE AND SPENCE, SA, APARTMENT 1, SCORE: 27.5 (WINNERS)

Kerrie and Spence nailed the style and look of their room reveal, according to the judges.

They would have come second to netballers Carla and Bianca had they not used their bonus point, but they did, topping the leaderboard.

They went for a simple but glamorous style with a double top vanity, black fixtures and a luxurious herringbone feature wall. The only criticism they copped was for their black water drains which Shaynna described as being an unnecessary prominent feature.

Comparing it to their previous bathroom reveal which lacked personality, Neale said they had taken this one to another level.

“It has a high-end feel. I love the subtle details like the beautiful herringbone effect on the tiling. It all works together visually and feels very balanced,” he said.

John said he couldn’t see a potential buyer walking in and not being impressed.

Shaynna commended them on their cabinet space (which they lacked in their other bathroom reveal), regal elegance and functionality.

COURTNEY AND HANS, WA, APARTMENT 2: SCORE 24

The biggest controversy for Hans and Courtney’s room were the terrazzo floor tiles, with John saying it had the potential of polarising people.

But Shaynna disagreed saying it was very “St Kilda” and a lot of hotels have this style of tiling on their floors and baths.

The couple had a large walk-in shower and the hero was their freestanding stone bath.

Neale loved the bath and Shaynna commended them on their matching vanity sinks.

However, they got knocked for not maximising on the space and having a “clunky” shower finish.

Despite winning last week’s bathroom reveal, this week’s design wasn’t enough to nab another win. They came third.

“They rested on size and scale being luxury and it’s not enough,” Shaynna said.

NORM AND JESS, QLD, APARTMENT 4 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 23

Norm and Jess came second in last week’s bathroom room reveal with the judges loving their look of luxury.

This week, they came second-last, with the judges knocking them on scale issues.

They were only a point in front of Hayden and Sara.

Norm and Jess went for a sophisticated look which had a recessed shaving cabinet and a double shower and floor-to-ceiling marble feature wall.

“It doesn’t have that sense of luxury,” John said, “but does have a nice first impression.”

“It’s a small bathroom that is punching above its weight because it’s got the height,” Neale said, adding that he loved the marble.

Unfortunately, Shaynna wasn’t impressed with the scaling, particularly their basins and shower door.

She said it didn’t have the softness and luxury of their other bathroom, but John did say it met the criteria of a penthouse.

BIANCA AND CARLA, VIC, APARTMENT 5 (PENTHOUSE), SCORE: 27

The girls received near-to-perfect feedback and would have won had Kerrie and Spence not used their bonus.

The only negativity was from Shaynna over the drains.

“The hair, how do you get the hair out?” Shaynna asked, and she had a point. The struggle is real.

But other than that, the judges found it to be a calm, sophisticated and “pretty perfect” bathroom.

They had a stone wall feature in the shower, similar to their master bathroom (this one was half the size) and they continued the theme with a custom timber vanity with marble top and tiles running all the way up the 4m-high ceiling.

Neale had trouble taking his eye off the benchtop which Shaynna described as a stunning combination of timber and marble.

While it was lack of storage space which cost them in last week’s bathroom reveal, this time Shaynna said they nailed it, providing ample space.

“What I am seeing here is the best of simplicity where less is more. The style is terrific and they really understand luxury,” Neale said.

John said he would be very confident in presenting a bathroom like this to a potential buyer.

“It’s pretty close to flawless.”
